Gearing

Hi I am new to preds so I could do with some help on gearing it for my brushless motors. Can anyone recommend gearing for the following motors

4.5
5.5
7.5

I have a fan heatsink for use with all of these

Also what type of pinion ? Tooth type ?

Hi you want 48DP pinions and I gear a LRP X12 5.5 on 18tooth pinion with lipos and find this just about right - 9.76 to 1

I've not run a 4.5 in there or a 7.5 but have suggested a starting point..

4.5 = 17 or 18 (I've not run a 4.5 so thats a starting point)
5.5 = 18 or 19 tooth
6.5 = 20-21
7.5 = 22-23 (i've not run a 7.5 so thats a starting point)

You need a 48dp pinion (same as most other manufacturers)

Thanks guys ! I will get myself some pinions !
Going to run the 4.5 as it's part of my new combo but it's one of those xcelorin esc and you can detune the motor heavily with the software so going to try this first. See if I can get a smooth power delivery as I race indoors on the slippery stuff !

I have some very old pinions from when I used to race a cat 2000 are these not 48dp ?

yep they should be! Although if they are the long boss ones (the ones needed on the standard 2000 with the plastic gearbox and alloy motor plate) you'll probably struggle to fit them...

doesn't the pinion-choice depend also on what Brushless motor you run?

I've heard people say that different motors (brands) need different gearing.
(I myself run an LRP, but know a lot of guys that run CS-motors and I know Tekin is also driven a lot in the Pred.)

Yeah, motor choice will influence the gearing you want (especially if the rotor is bonded and not sintered).. the above is just a starting point (for sintered) and gearing can be adjuted depending on timing, rotor size etc. But, you won't be far wrong if you start as above and go from there.
