What pitch are my pinions?

Somehow various pinions I have have got mixed up in my pitbox.:bored:
As I think I have 48dp, .4 and .6 in there, is there an easy way to find out which is which?
Preferably before I strip any spur gears!
Thanks:thumbsup:

Rough calculations (the strict measurement of gear diameter is a little more complex and slightly smaller than the full diameter)...

48dp is "diametric pitch". Measure the diameter of the pinion you have in inches, divide by the number of teeth. If the answer is 48, it's a 48dp pinion.

Module gears are similar. Measure the diameter in mm, divide by the number of teeth, see how close to 0.6 or 0.4 the result is.

Problem is that 64 and 0.4 module are very similar. You can tell the difference when meshed but difficult by eye. 48dp and 0.6mod are easy to tell apart, 0.6 is somewhat coarser.

.4module - like 64dp
.6module - not as course as 32dp
48dp... in the middle...

without a tooth profile guage, your going to have to use your eyes dude!!
