What can I use to fill battery slots on X5 chassis?
 

Hi,

Looking to fill the battery slots on the X5 chassis. Ideally should keep water out.

Wondering if there is some sort of filler / putty that would be good for the job, or any other means of doing it?

Any ideas at all?

Epoxy works well. If you want to make it black you can grind up an old wishbone or something and mix it in with the epoxy then poor it into the slots. Use sellotape on the bottom of the chassis to block up the holes and poor the epoxy in from the top.

Like Araldite then?

Is there a cheaper brand that I should look out for?

After a quick look on the bay it seems that some of it it quite quick setting and some of it is putty.

Yeh, araldite will be perfect. You can get 5 minute setting one, as long as you have everything prepared before you mix it up then that'll be spot on.

no no no NOT araldite - it looks bloody awful when it is done.

you need Milliput - it's a two part modelling compound that works like an adhesive whilst drying and is very tough once set.

You can also get it in black, which once dried is not that disimilar to the chassis colour - another bonus of it is that it is also quite heavy, getting the weight just where you want it....where the cells used to be!

I've found milliput a bit brittle in the past. Which is why I now use araldite, if you add graphite dust to it (as I suggested above) then it doesn't look 'bloody awful' and in fact matches the chassis colour very well.

I'll try my chances with some black milliput first I think, as it is cheaper. As long as I don't slap the bottom of the chassis on anything nasty it should be okay.

I'm with Craig on this one. I've had an experiment with Milliput on a spare X5 chassis and it seemed to brittle.

Going to look at the Araldite option, although might just end up with gaffa tape.

i used epoxy resin looks good if its neat.
make sure you key the surfaces well, while you're there you can fill the other holes in the chassis, eg aerial hole and battery post hole/s

I've used various adhesives but found the best option to be milliput. I've now run it once indoors and once outdoors its still fully bonded and undamaged. I even have 2 servo mounting holes drilled partially through it on the pred.

I know a few others that are using it also. Maybe time will prove that its not as good as i think but for the moment i'm happy.

I like the araldite option it works well and has a little give.

I think DMS have Graphite dust on special offer at the moment too for those interested. :thumbsup:

I know its too late for you, but for others, you could always get a B4 chassis left over from an X-6 conversion and cut it up to fill the slots. Use some Losi red label CA to hold them in place and sand it smooth. Thats what I used to fill the slots in the X-6 when we were first experimenting with Lipos in that.

I knew somebody would find a use for those old things...

There's this 3M product... DP [number] something that Olivier uses. That's great stuff! (but a bit expensive)

It's like epoxy to work with, but looks exactly like carbon.
