new lipo retainer

5 Attachment(s)
i was thinking about a better way to retain my trakpower 4900 lipo in the CAT as i wasn't too keen on gluing the carbon battery retainers (the battery is used in my 2WD). i didn't want to use velcro as the 4900 is too tall to get velcro under the strap and still hook over the front locating pin without looking silly.

anyway - i designed a new 3mm thick carbon retainer that uses existing holes in the chassis and holds the battery in really well - picture attached. it basically holds the battery against the servo / front bulkhead and stops the back of the pack moving left/right/backwards

although the retainer is designed for trakpower 4900's, it should hold TP 3200/3800's (although i haven't tested them)

Looks really tidy that :)

Ive used a X-6 carbon shim glued to the chasis to stop it mooving and it 'Seems' to be OK - Not had any issues yet...

I'm going to use doublesided tape. I hope it'll be sticky enough for one race day.

Great work.

I just couldn't bring myself to glue the standard retainers to my batteries, so ended up using velcro. This is a much better solution..

Nice one..

thanks for the comments. i'm not knocking the schumacher designers at all as i know how hard (read impossible) it is to satisfy everyones requirements but i think the standard lipo retention system didn't take into account peoples reluctance to glue the kit retainers to their batteries thus making them difficult to fit into other cars

Chrislong 06-02-2009 11:47 PM

Nick, if you want to make any more for people - put me down as no.1 on your list of enquiries - I want one fella!!!;)

nickhudson 07-02-2009 12:03 AM

chris - i was thinking about making a few more. i have got two prototypes....:D

glypo 07-02-2009 12:46 AM

Wow I want one of those! Very nice work, well done.

If you are going to make some more, put me on the list too please!

Cassp0nk 07-02-2009 12:53 AM

I'd be in for one too!

Where did you get the adonised nut etc from? If you were making more would be great if you also supplied the fixings ;)

Really don't like the battery mount system they came up with. Very fiddly to get the battery in/out too. (my locators are double sided taped on and I have velcro on the top under the bar).

hello eveyone - thanks for the interest in the battery retainer. i should clarify a few things before i make any more :-

1. i haven't tested it in anger as i've not run the car yet (waiting for the shell from Jon Miller) so can't 100% guarantee it's race proven - i have no doubt it'll be up to it but i'd rather make that clear up front.

2. the retainer definately fits TP 4900's - i can't say about any other batteries as that's all i run. if you look on the TP website it gives the footprint of the other batteries which all look very similar but the heights are different. the retainer is 3mm thick which replicates the purple spacers under the battery strap post. a thinner battery may need some foam under the strap to stop it rattling.

3. the retainer will have a small (approx. 2mm diameter) hole at the end of the outside leg to glue it to the chassis. this stops any flexing of that leg. you will have to glue it to the chassis - the hole is there to drop a tiny amount of CA glue through whilst holding the leg in position - it is less messy than trying to spread glue on the retainer and then clamping it to the chassis

if, after all that;), you still are interested - let me know and i'll see what i can do to get some more made.
