Overcharging of Lipo's

Don't know if anyone has seen this youtube film about Lipo. Please note the cells were clearly overcharged. I'm glad I have got a lipo sack!

I found the link whilst purchasing some electrical components from Giantcod.

The clip would certainly make sure that everyone uses a Lipo sack, whilst charging at home and at a race meeting!!

i dont use one unless its required (like worksop) in 3 years not had one problem, its only if you abuse them, and any fuel cell is danjerous when abused!

I for one have serious doubts about the usefullness of a Lipo Sack. I reckon it's gonna do fuck all if a pack blows in it.

I know that but I also know that there's a lot of energy involved and I can't see the bag retaining all that energy.

Yup, LiPo sacks can be real lifesavers and do a good job of containing flames. LiPo is incredibly safe as long as you just don't abuse the cells (just like NiMH), but there are always going to be accidents.

There used to be loads of hysteria about LiPos being apparently lethal and dangerous, but thankfully that's died down now. Ya just have to treat them with respect. :)

I see LiPo sacks like any minor safety item, it gives you that feeling of being safe, when you have that wooly feeling, you will make mistakes. The other issue about LiPo sacks, is that you really have no idea on the condition of you cell, whilst it is on charge. So, if you are unlucky enough to be such a big enough dimwit, to seriouslt overcharge your lipo, you may just be lucky enough, that the cell does have it's terminal failure inside the Sack. But I am a strong believer in Murphys (sods) law, and that if there is a chance of a mistake/accident/failure, it will always happen at the most innoportune moment...... like as you pull your Cell out of the Sack, the sack will do no good then, or in your car.....

So, for me, I just think, vigilance, on behalf of all racers, keeping an eye on others charging habbits, and bringing issue's to light, rather than having to use Lucky Dip.... As long as you charge on a CC/CV charger and use a lipo cut-out, these cells are far, far safer than the NiMH mini-grenades.
