Plumbers / Combi Boiler, Heating System

Just had a Baxi Combi serviced under warranty by Baxi enginner and he reckons I need to use Sentinel x400 & x100 in the system due to the sludge that was present in the old plumbing to the rads etc.

Got talking to a shop and that reckons these are worth a punt also as BG won't fit new Combi's without them inline

MagnaCleanŽ Professional

MagnaClean TwinTech

Sentinel System Filter

anything else out there that's worth a look?

I used to be covered by B gas till they did the dirty on me. Having had their breakdown cover for years we moved house. They said they would continue cover only if the new house c/h system was inspected. They gave it the al clear , all was fine till the pump packed in they would not replace it as it had failed due to muck in the system, I told them they checked the system 6 months earlier but they said they dont inspect the water in the pipes and rads. so goobye b, gas

all I do now is flush out the system every 18 mnths and fill with the inhibitors you can buy from Wicks diy Had no problems for the last 9.5 yrs.

If you want some cheap there a batch on ebay ending in the next few hours 19.36pm tonight

Glen any system having a new boiler fitted should be power flushed before fitting boiler using X400 as a cleanser and final fill of new installation with X100 or other manufactures products, if not they can void any guarantee. As for the 3 products listed at the end of your post I personally would not bother with.
Why is the engineer saying you need this done at this stage, are you having a problem? if so what.

you also need to be aware that if you use any sludge removal product in your central heating system if you have any leaks that are currently not evident after a dose of sludge remover, they will be evident!

true but only a small chance. If you dont remove the sludge you can get build up in the radiator effectively reducing the heat they throw out if they become blocked. I should have mentioned I also use a product that finds small weeps and seals them, just as a precaution.

B gas would not replace my pump as they said it was not covered for damage caused by internal corrosion within the pipes ie the rusting of the steel radiators. Im not a plumber but then again again I dont need to pay their expensive costs to replace pumps ect with just a about 2 hrs work every 18 months

1. wan't power flushed, just given a good flow of water through rads 1 @ a time whilst he got on with other work on install

2. X100 only used by plumber

3. I'll consider skipping the filters

4. Combi was squealing like a pig and random intervals. Turned out the diverter valve needed opening out to increase circulation. That's when he advised X400 after another good flush

Hi Glen. Dave Walton is the name. Just retired after 44 years in plumbing and heating, 35 of them running own company and being one the early CORGI members.
I would say that flushing out system every 18 months is a bit excesive. But what ever you find works for you.
The idea of X400 is that it breaks down any contamination in the system and keeps it water born until dumpted to drain. An average house done correctly usually takes between 6-8 hours to do.
X100 is not a cleanser it is a inhibitor which is supposed to prevent any further corrosion.
Combi's squealing is quite often caused by pump starting to fail thus the flow of water is not fast enough through the heat exchanger.
I would think your engineer will of opened the By Pass valve to increase the flow of water through the boiler, you could find as a result that some of your radiators furthest away run a bit cooler.
