new to touring car
 

So I fancied a dabble in 1/10th touring car and have just got my hands on an x-ray tc 2011 spec. I know its an older car but wanted to try the class before splashing the big cash.

Anyone have any set up tips etc for this car? Which is the best body shell to run? Which addictive to people use? I will probably be running blinky, so i guess thats with a 17.5t. I currently race both GT12 and LMP 12th so am not new to the circuit scene.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Its best to go down the club you plan to race at, they will be able to help you choose what electrics and shell to use. The setup of the car will depend on what tyres you use and what surface you run on.

Don't worry about using a old car, X-rays are very good cars and until the t4 didn't change much. I was still using my xray t2'009 until about 18 months ago and was still competitive with it.

depending of tarmac of the kind of carpet.
Tarmac, Protoform LTCR is like the basic.
Carpet, Protoform Mazda speed 6 it is a safe pick.

For body shells, as suggested, Protoform Mazda Speed 6 or LTC is the norm. Speed 6 is more neutral and a recommended starting point.

With regards to additive, obviously it differs between indoor carpet and outdoor but I would suggest either pick a brand you like and try it out or check with your local club what everyone else is running. Myself I am running LRP Asphalt which seems to work well in cold-warm conditions.

One absolute must for outdoor 1/10 TC is Tyre Warmers.

Also as you might nw, 17.5t blinky is all about motor so ensure your motor is running cool and with correct timing and FDR for maximum performance.

Get yourself a good used setup station, or if you know someone who could lend you 1 even better. Check the Xray forum for carpet setups for your chassis and get it somewhere near before you go to your first meeting.
Shock position, droop, springs and camber is generally all you will adjust from there

I have a set up station for my lmp....wonder if it will fit the x-ray? Hmmm have to check that one when the xray arrives from the postman

So which motor is the current motor of choice for indoor carpet running? I got myself a D4 trinity 17.5 for blinky but was wondering what people are using for 13.5 boosted and 17.5 blinky... I currently run the Reedy Mach 3 13.5 ss in my gt12 and the mach 3 10.5 in my LmP and really love them but would the 13.5 translate to 2s in TC?

I run a Mach 3 13.5 in boosted TC. I first ran it on the 1/12th National track at Crewe and took me a while to get the settings right as I'd been running 17.5 blinky for so long. Anyway I couldn't seem to get it warm but with almost full boost/turbo on an Orca VX3 a FDR of 6.5 it came into its own and still only just warm at the end of 5 mins. I race it now on a tight indoor track, same gearing but with reduced boost and it is a great motor

Thanks for the advice!! Whats a good starting FDR for 17.5 blinky on carpet on quite a tight twisty track? Currently Ive set the car up with a FDR of about 4. But am thinking thats way off? Thoughts please!

That's probably not far off; we run around 3.3 outdoors.

4 - 4.5 should work, start with the timing low on 4 FDR, give a good few minutes on track then temp the motor. I use my fingers but you can get those IR guns pretty cheap now. if it's getting hot already increase the FDR and try again. When I'm happy with the temp I start adding the timing. You really need to race it now to put the motor to the test before adding or removing anything else

Had a quick blast last night in between rounds. The car is quick enough for me (with my current skills) but suffered from on power under steer and off power over steer.

I am running 32r sorex all round and used Spider Blue additive on carpet. Fully coating the rears and about a third coverage on the inner edge of the fronts. Left it until it had dried front and rear (probably about 20mins) and then ran the car.

Do I need a major set up change? Or can the issues be fixed quickly?

What track is it, what carpet is it, what set up are you running?
I would start with
2*camber all round 5 - 6mm ride height depending on bumps,
front
2.8 Spring
1.4 roll bar
6mm down stop/droop
1* toe out
Kit roll centre
Shocks in middle position 350-400 oil
No additive
Add weight under steering cranks and behind bumper between bulkheads

Rear
2.6 Spring
1.2 roll bar
5mm downstop
3* toe in
Kit roll centre
Shocks in middle position
Full additive

Rear belt almost slack front belt almost tight

If it's got a gear diff in the rear, go thicker on the oil. If it's a ball-diff you can tighten it up a touch.

Stand the rear shocks up, or lay the fronts down. You can also lower the rear inner camber link (or raise the front).

These will all give less steering on entry and more on exit.

Currently running kit set up (as in per instruction book). Carpet is Prima GT.
