What do people use to get the look of carbon?

You can use tool box liner. Get it from the likes of Halfords etc.

I found a good technique on line

First coat area with translucent black window paint ( do it un evenly )
Then use the tool box liner ( or dash board grip mat ) as a mask and spray over it with black or a dark graphite , then back with black .
Looked good when I did it
