Matt shells?

Lot of race cars running a hard as nails matt paint job these days. Has anyone tried this on an RC car? Was thinking maybe take fine sandpaper to outside of shell and hopefully get something stealth bomber stylee?

Try it. You will only find out one way.

When I did touring cars I thought about painting a shell up in a steel colour with bits of rust on the door and bonnet joints. Then painting the shell on the outside too.
So that when it got hit and the paint on the outside flaked off, it left the rust and steel colour showing through!!:)

Never got round to doing it though. But it would have looked cool.

yep, paint inside then sand outside with a fine paper.
or use a black primer or matt black paint on the outside.

I'm thinking it will be hard to get a consistent finish with sand paper? Might look a bit 'grained'. Some sort of matt paint would be better IMO. Or try using Scotchpad abrasive pads, they might work well.

What about matte top coat? It won't do the job? (haven't tried it yet - just guess)

You could probably get away with using a really fine shot blaster at low pressure. I've used one before on aluminum, never tried doing plastic though, maybe i'm just being stupid :D
