I'm think of getting back into rc racing after 15 years. Alot has changed.

Will someone please explain all this brushless stuff.
Also will someone please explain lipos?
I'm only going to be doing club meets. What controllers and servos are good enough?

Any advise is appreciated

Scott tbh it's a lot to tell you. Best to pop down to the club see what we are running and get a proper explanation whist looking at a buggy of today setup.

We race every Thursday evening and alternate Sunday's. We also have practice sessions on alternate Tuesdays.

lipos are better, they give more power, no memory effect and last about 3 times as long from a charge

ESC's, do everything, from a program box, added to that the brushless motor. you no longer need to have more than one motor, one or 2 lipos/batteries. decent charger.
much cheaper than the old days, no more worries about dumping.
one motor can work on every track.

time is now spent on set up rather than power and efficiency.

pop to the club, have a chat, pick a car you like. pop along to Apex models in crowthorne and get racing.

I went up there last night. Spent time chatting to Stuart. Cars and electric have changed a lot. I'm going to see if I can hold of a half descent car to use for a meeting to see if I still enjoy it.

I remember only bring able to do half a lap practise then worrying in the 4th minute when leading I was going to dump any second.

Any suggestions on fair good entry level electrics.

What motor to get, turn and make. What maintenance do you have to do to them.

Do you get the programme card with the speedo?

It was me that responded to your emails you sent to the club, sorry I couldn't be there last night but I had a long standing engagement.

To try and help...

Never really a problem these days - at our track the average race is about 10 - 16 laps dependent upon layout etc in 5 minutes and lipos are good for about 20 - 28 laps before dumping, maybe more so it's never an issue. Even the shorty style ones.


I'm not the best to advise on this but I'd say the speed passion brand is a good place to start (motor is c. £30 IIRC), just be careful that you don't "buy cheap, buy twice"

Lots of brands out there - I'd say stay away at these early days from LRP ones as they are animals, speed passion are fine on a budget and then ones from REDS or Orion are good

Depends on the manufacturer, most of them you do, Orion you don't usually though this may have changed recently.

What about lipo battery power. As there is a lot of different sizes.
Got to look at controllers as well. Want one that you can store all your cars on different but not too over the top.?

I would recommendt the sanwa mt4 these are excellent kit for the money and will be good to take you from where you are now upto a very competitive level

What about sticks. I've used both in the past as that's what I mainly used

Had just been reading your post about chatting to Stuart (Jimmy) McCabe.

A recent addition to the stick market that the club users are using is http://www.futabarc.com/systems/futk...grs/index.html

My suggestion would be generally get yourself along to Apex Models knowing which car you want and make sure they've got it in and they'll be able to help with everything else. TBH a lot of us are in there on a Saturday afternoon anyway regular as clock work so we can all give our 2 penny worth

Is your club car driveable? Might have to use that for a couple of meetings.

Yes the club car is now ready for running on Thursday - it's not the most competitive car out there but at least it will give you a taste of racing again

OK great. How much is it and what time do I have to be there. Bringing another racer aswell.

No charge to use club car, £10 to race for non-members and gates open at 6:30
