SP Reventon Pro 1.1

Just a quick question regarding the SP Reventon Pro 1.1, I've just got a new one and was wondering if I had to program the set up card via the pc before it would connect and work on the esc?

I had to update the firmware on mine first , then I could plug in the Esc and update its own firmware and settings etc....
