Buffing a dull shell?
Hi guys
My shell is black & after almost 9 months of us its starting it look a little dull, especially on the sides. I've tried a few things. I tried a some wet sand paper, but only upto 1200 as I didnt have any higher but didnt make much difference, and a form of T-Cut but didnt seem to make any real difference, also tried a metal polish but no effect. Lastly I tried a dremal with a small buffing wheel, this worked the best but was a thin line between buffing and marking the surface Any suggestions on how to get some form of gloss/shine back? |
If it a lexan shell, trying to polish it with any cutting compound or wet n dry will dull the surface. If you got tyres marks etc, lynx deodorant works well or a decent furniture polish.

Hi
Yeah its a lexan shell. I did try a T-Cut style cutting compound, Autoglym Super Resin Polish to be exact, it didnt make it any worse or any better! |
You're on the right lines, T-cut is the best I have used followed by a good car body polish. I know you said it hadn't made much difference, but it does take some real elbow grease. use a circular motion to cut and clean thoroughly before moving to the polish. Its important to have a really good polishing off cloth so you don't scratch and dull the surface up again, a brand new duster is good for this.

Tcut scuffs the shell, it is a cutting compound after all. The most I would go to is a kitchen cleaner but it really depends on what you are trying to rectify, a good PIC may help.

Use IPA
Use IPA - gives shell glossy look but does not damage

Novus Plastic Polish, it's designed specifically for polishing out scratches in plastic and giving it a deep shine. An example of it used on vacformed ABS here.

Horses for courses! Intrigued why the glass is in Dolby Digital... Is that just to improve things for when sufficient IPA has been consumed and you are seeing in stereo? |
