Outdrive wear!
 

Hi all, I notice that the rear outdrive wears really fast. after about 3-4 packs I starts to notice wear, then it starts to groove it, while the pin on the universal look like new.

Any solution to the problem?

what type of track are you on? maybe too must dust is getting in at the outdrive, or maybe you on on very high traction.. which will make parts wear quicker.. not 3-4 packs though... that's near academy buttery!!

I have also noticed that the rear outdrives wear really fast. I changed to the B4 rear hubs and CVD's and that helped some, but they still wear more than I would expect. The B4 rear CVD's seem to have a longer pin on the outdrive side, so I think this helps. The Yok universal pin is just shy of the outside of the outdrive, so I think it accelerates the wear. The fronts do not seem to have the same problem.

I honestly didn't notice this during the review - maybe I'm just not quick enough :D. I wonder for stuff like this, wether a user comment feature would be a good addition, to inform people of ongoing longer term problems that occur ??? (for all cars, not just this fine example)

i found this aswell, i went through 4 packs then i sold the car lol. does anyone want to send me there old ones? i can see if i can get them made in a stronger material.:p

sounds like they havent been heat treated then,same as the academys.

if they have enough carbon in you can heat treat them yourself as i did with the academy ones.

My BX has the same problem, as do two other BX's I know of. Big problem on what is probably the most expensive 4wd buggy out there. At least the replacements are cheaper than the MR4-BCS parts plus you get a new centre diff bearing.

My rears start to go after a full days racing, fronts take less of a hammering but after 7 meetings are now also wearing out. Mainly used on grass tracks, not gravel or high grip astro / carpet.

Would it be possible to fit blades. On some of your old outdrives file down the slots. You would have to be quite carefull though to get it centerd .

From what I have heard the original kits out drives were not heat treated. I imagine that some of the replacements were not heat treated as well. I have more runs on the buggy Than I can count (60-100) and you would not even no I had one run on them. I would get a hold of Yokomo and see if they would trade you out with the heat treated ones senses it was there mistake of not heat treating the ones you have in the first place. They are aware of the problem and should help you out....

I think you can put grease on the outdrives and put on it "thermical sheath".
I can give you by email a photo of what I do to maintain the outdrives clean for a year...

I like to know how to do that, do you need special equiptment?

Ive always wondered if a thin layer of silicon would help? Would prob rip straight off though.

To be fair if you put grease on then seal it by wrapping insulation tape or something round it then it'd probably help.

My BX's are not suffering from any outdrive wear... yet!

I shall keep an eye on them but it's not something I've noticed to date, as much as I like the BX I wouldn't try to cover up any issues the car suffers from, just its not something I've noticed. I guess if you drive them nice and slow you can avoid any wear issues :)

Yup still the same ones, you can check them out soonish yourself (hope to post up sometime this week), I think its all to do with how you treat your car ;)

a tight car wont help either!

I didn't get any wear on Bathy's spare car and I was definately not holding back. I would either say it's a bad batch or you have some major tight spots in your tranny.
