I (and a few others I know) use one of these:

http://www.actionmodelcentre.co.uk/p...od=JPD-4402900

I've used it with both Ni-Mh and LiPo and it is one of the best chargers I have used, I prefer to use it over my Much More CTX charger which cost about 3 times as much!

You'll need a power supply with it too if you haven't already got one - the one I use is http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFun...n&ItemID=23410 but there are loads of others out there, just make sure it is powerful enough (better to pay a bit more now for a quality product then get a cheap one and have to buy the quality product in a few months time - I learnt this the hard way ). If you want to get both from the same place this charger is also good http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFun...n&ItemID=29476, I've seen a Schumacher sponsored driver using it.

The Inteli Control V3 goes beyond your normal Charger with lots of extra sophisticated programming. Gives fully automatic charging of NiCads and easily adjusted manually set charging of NiMH Lithium and Lead Acid batteries. Even comes with a built in cooling fan so you may charge continuously without over heating. The manual setting only requires you to set: Battery type (Nicad NiMH etc) Number of Cells Capacity Charging Current. You can also set discharge current for NiCad and NiMH to cycle the batteries and cycling can be set to be done from 1 to 99 times automatically. Pleasantly clear instructions are included. Very advanced controls.

Because they are both 12V chargers. You could use a good 12V battery (such as a leisure battery) but for ease of transport if you race inside a lot a power supply is your best bet.

The majority of the "competition" spec chargers are 12V. The ones aimed at the backyard basher etc, are the one's that are 240V.

Col 06-12-2008 08:02 PM

because all decent chargers run off 12volt supply, not 240volt house supply. You need the power supply to reduce the voltage to the required amount.
A supply is not needed if you've got a superb car battery or a lesure battery to run from instead.

EDIT beaten too it...

i4n 06-12-2008 08:08 PM

........sorry Col!

Because most of the time you are in a field and a car or leisure battery is your only power, generators are being used more, if you have 240 volts then a power supply will allow you to use your 12volt charger. I use a BC6 which is 12 & 240volt, but close to £100 new.

Get down to a club and see whats what, ask questions and see what people are using and why.

jim76 06-12-2008 10:46 PM

the Bantam BC6 is the best alrounder out there. Does NiMH cells and Lipo (balancing). Runs from 12v or 240v.
It is around £100 as JC said, but if you can find a second hand one it would be well worth getting. It would cover you for most cells for years.

have a look on ebay maybe
