I POD Touch and BT Home Hub
 

Got myself a 2nd gen i pod touch last night, tried to connect to my BT Home Hub managed to enter the WEP key so it has recognised the connection but when clicking on safari/itunes it says cannot connect to the internet!

Anyone had similar problems or anyone know any solutions!

Has it got an ip address? Why are you using WEP and not WPA?

im sure it was WEP key it asked for, may have been WPA! the ipod was connected to the wifi!

yeah it was showing as having a IP address in the settings

What ip? 169.xxx....? Or 192.xxx.....?

WEP is hexadecimal, WPA can be words, which do you use?

I have the black BT home hub and jono has an i phone and he managed to connect but not sure if the touch is the same as the i phone.

Once you have a wifi connection the next things you need to connect to the internet are

an ip address (would imagine 192.168.0.x)
a subnet mask (with above would be 255.255.255.0)
a default gate way IP address (should be ip address of wireless router - probably 192.168.0.1)
and a DNS server IP address (could be either the same as default gateway or something else such as 212.103.224.51)

You need the address and mask to identify you on your home network and what your home network is. You need the default gateway address so all trafic not local to your network (ie internet!) can be passed to your router to be sent to your isp. You need the dns address so when you type www.oople.com into your browser it can ask a "domain name server" what the ip address of www.oople.com is ( 87.106.142.119 in case you were wondering) then it knows to send your request to that IP address.

If you are missing the dns info you could try open a browser and type the oople ip address in the address bar where you would normally put www.oople.com. if it connects to oople everything bar dns is working.

Sorry. It is hard to explain it any easier than that with out going into far more detail than I can on this thread.

Basically, all the devices connected to your home hub (wireless router) should be given those 4 key bits of infomation.

IP address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS server address

If not then perhaps the i pod isn't set to recieve its network settings automatically (known as DHCP). I know how the internet works as I teach Cisco certification courses (Cisco - very large networking company) however I have never seen a home hub or i pod touch so I have no first hand experience of your specific product.

Homehubs should DHCP and DNS automatically and the Apple products connect with DHCP out of the box so i doubt it is an issue with that, as long as the router has issued an address.
Post your ip address, gateway and DNS addresses first, that will help diagnose if the Ipod is actually on the network in the first place.

have managed to get i tunes to connect ( i think) it is now just saying loading in the middle of the screen!

went into settings on bt and typed what i could into i pod, still bits of info missing cant seem to find them on bt

its set on DHCP

DNS was blank so got that from searching on BT,

IP address is 169.254.160.195
subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 bt says it 255.255.255.o i pod wont let me change
router section is blank cant add to it
dns i typed in as on BT 192.168.1.254
search domains is blank but can add details
client id is black but can add details
HTTP Proxy is off

That IP address doesn't look right to me, try setting the IP address of the iPhone to 192.168.1.250, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.1.254 leave the DNS as 192.168.1.254

In windows go to go run (or in vista hold windows key and press r) - type cmd

ipconfig in the command window

The default gateway is your gateway + DNS, it will also tell you your subnet

169 is a private address, it's not been given an ip by your router.

right to be able to enter all the details manual i have had to click on ip address as static but still have empty boxes for Router and Search Domains!!Still just got loading....... in the middle when click on safari or i tunesPaul
how ever once i have entered all the info then go to try and log in, then go back to the setting it is resetting them all back to original

You don't have a domain, your on a residential network, well unless you built one, but you wouldn't....

Do laptops connect properly? I would suggest trying it elsewhere first to proove it's not a problem with the Ipod or Router.

yep laptops connect properly, my psp does used too and mobiles with WIFI in them

Does your Ipod connect to other networks?

Is the network saved under the network list? Delete it and try everything on automatic, you shouldn't have any issues if other stuff connects fine.

havent had a chance to try it on another network yet, may have to visit mcdonalds tonight!

i will try and get the network to work manually then!

If it doesn't work automatically then i think their may be a corruption on the ipod's network settings. Try resetting them, deleting your network and trying again. If you go down the manual route you wont be able to use it in other places.
