Leaking KF diff

The gear diff on our KF sprung a leak such that the front and rear pulleys, the chassis floor and even the roof of the shell got a good coating of silicon. It had run for quite a few meets before doing this... (i.e. was still dry).

I degreased it all, rebuilt the diff and fitted a new belt as the old one was impregnated with silicon - though there was no evidence of it having slipped.

First time out no leaks ... second time out we've got another thin line of silicon down the roof of the shell.

The diff cap was tightend as hard as I dared and both o-rings fitted. Do they work loose such that I should have tightened it again after initial use or do they generally stay dry? In which case we've just got a leaky one!

Cheers!

Overfilling the diff?

I wondered that, so I was doubly cautious second time around to cover the pins and no more. :(

There was zero over spill when I screwed it up tight.

If all the o-rings are in good order inspect the housing for cracks.

If you have spilt a little oil in the screw holes - when you tighten the screw up the hydraulic effect can crack the housing..

Thanks Jameses! I'll take a closer look at the housing.

PS - whilst I am posting, which version of the SV2 rear wishbones do people run? Kit or Med flex?

AmiSMB 04-02-2015 02:49 PM

If your kit is an early one then I think there was a running change in the o-rings. Best get some new ones for it. As for wishbones I usually run medium flex on the K1

Cheers Grant. New diff, plus new body and seals on order.
