X-6 offset rear droop???????

OK, I swear I've not been at the wacky weed, but the rear droop on my X-6 appears offset! Ie, more droop on the right than left. I measured the shocks and they're the same. I put a 30 thou spacer inside the right shock and the droop now looks the same.

I've not measured it properly with droop blocks (a-la touring car) but its noticeable to the eye.

Anyone else have this?

Cheers,
Scotty P.

It shouldn't be like that.

Check the rear bulkhead is sitting down fully on the chassis.

Make sure there's no binding in the suspension, or bent hinge pin :)

Check the screws that mount the shocks top and bottom are not bent.

I know what it is, I know what it is :woot:

One of the threaded inserts that sits between the chassis and rear bulkhead won't be seated correctly. Danneth did some work on my car the other year on night in the dark and few foul of this school boy error

Good one G. If the inserts are not seated into the hex part correctly you would see about a 30 tho' offset, could be bang on that!

Did I make the school boy error or fix it? Either way I must stop building (re) other peoples cars ;)

I don't actually remember what you did to it, I think you only did it because you had (a bit of) light, and I had a beer :woot:

You did a great job in the circumstances Danneth

I fixed it Saturday morning ;)

Thanks Northy. I'll check out the inserts. Have a feeling that might be it as everything else seems normal.

Cheers,
Scotty

Just thought I'd close the loop on this after my inspection on the weekend. Big E was right. The bulkhead was not sitting completely flat on the chassis. This was due to some extra material on the left hand side bulkhead mount. Once I shaved this off with a scalpel blade, the bulkhead sits completely flat.

It's worth noting that we're only talking about a few thou here. However a few thou at the bulkhead will be amplified many times at the end of the shock tower where the shock mounts. Any disparity will result in offset droop.

I've actually seen a few other cars since with this issue. If you haven't checked it, I'd take a look.

Whilst on the subject, I also took the time to check the front droop, which was also out, relative to the rear. I did this using a set-up board, chassis blocks and measuring the axle height with an AE ride height gauge. I don't know for sure, but I suspect this is being caused by a slight imperfection in how the front skid plate mounts up to the chassis. Again, a very minor imperfection here will be amplified many times at the axle.

The only way to compensate for this is to wind one of the shock ends out so the axle heights are even.

Now I know my car is completely tweak free. At least until the next crash

Cheers,
Scotty P.

I had a brief flirtation, then came to my senses!
