Schumacher Silver Tyres and Acetone

Does anyone have any experience of using acetone to remove Schumacher Silver tyres? I've got a new set on pin drive wheels but now use hex drive wheels and wonder if they'll go all funny in the process.

Cheers,

Ian

Yeah they shrink and go rock solid! Don't bother trying :-)

I heard exactly the same story as John is describing. Instead, you might want to consider boiling them in water for a few hours :)

I always boil my tyres off rims and can say for sure they won't take hours to boil the glue away. If you keep the wheel submerged the glue will come away within about 45 mins to an hour.
Be careful pulling the tyre away from the rim once boiled especially with silver compounds as they could easily tear.

Being careful I've removed silver compound tyres before using this method.

Have you tried baking them?

Some compounds boil off fine, some don't. I tried to boil off schumacher cut staggers in green and they went all warped.

Thanks guys, I'll get the camping stove out and go for boiling them (I don't think I'll be allowed to do it inside the house!)

Ive acetoned tyres off and put them on different wheels and theyve been fine.

I acetoned off Silvers and remounted them but they were never as good as they should have been. My advice, don't try!

Could you take the hexes off? I can on mine and it would be a lot less faff

I could, but for one set of tyres it's not worth buying the pin drive conversion (I haven't got 4 bevel washers to put between the pins and the bearings to take the compression from the nut being done up on the wheel).
