RC10 CE 6 Gear Pinion??
 

I'm trying to resist the temptation of running my RC10 and let it just sit on the shelf as it has for the last year but I think i'm going to give in and give it a blast:thumbsup:

The first hurdle though (apart from tyres) is the motor pinion. The one that came with it is normal (b4) pitch(?) and dosen't match the 6 gear's spur. What do I need ?

I'm not likely to run anything more than a 19t so not sure where I should start gearing it from either? Any help would be much appreciated?

Hi, the stock setup is a 15 tooth 32 pitch gear. Thery're still available if you google around a bit.

You're prob wise to run milder motors with the 6 gear. The nylon idler gears in there are soft (esp after 20 odd years), and fail easily. I've gone through 3 gears in the last year running a 13double...

Amazingly, they're still available and CML still stock them. I ordered some from them through their shopatron website system the other week, and I had them in 24 hours. Amazing.

not 100% on this but werent they called 32dp

Yep 32dp back in those days, I may be wrong but do some tamiya cars still run 32? If this is the case you should be able to get a pinion sorted. give amc a ring they have loads of old stuff in the bottom of the draws.

Just wondering now if my Tamiya Desert Gator is 32dp(?) although I think its 17t not 15t but may be close enough. I should stop typing and just have bloody look really.:)

I know the Dark Impact DF-03 has "0.5 module" gear pitch, it's the same era as the DT-02 Desert Gator so it wouldn't surprise me if that were the same (do I get a point in the Anoraks quiz for knowing useless stuff like this?????)

Hmmmmm........just a small hint;).

Old Tamiya pinions are 0.8 module, which is fairly close to 32dp. They're still currently used on thier cars like the Hornets etc.

True 32dp gears come in at about 0.794 module, which means theyre' probrably close enough to interchange given the tolerances in the RC10. After all, the whole spur does tend to float around on the diff balls from side to side a bit anyway...

The two naming conventions are actually not that hard to understand, but they work in totally differnt ways.

Diametrical Pitch (dp) is imperial. It basically relates to the number of teeth on a gear that is one inch in diameter. Simple. So if you have a gear that is 32 dp, it would mesh with a gear with 32 teeth that has a diameter of one inch. (Strictly speaking, the diameter is that of the "pitch circle" - an imaginary circle going through the points where the meshing gears touch)

Module on the other hand, is metric. It's calculated by the dividing the pitch circle diameter in millimeters by the number of teeth. Also very easy.

So, if you have a 32dp gear, it'd mesh with a gear that has a pitch circle of 25.4mm (one inch) and 32 teeth. 25.4 divided by 32 is very very close to 0.8 - so your tamiya 0.8 module pinions are prob fine.

As an aside, please note that the 0.5 module gears on most newish Tamiyas and the 48dp gears on many other cars are NOT very close and will likely cause problems. By definition, 48dp equates to about 0.53 module - not nearly as close a match.

I have a gear ratio chart at home for the 6 gear car if you want to know the ratios.

Yeah, just try and run a 48dp pinion on a Dark Impact and listen to it squeal :cry:.

You can just run a 48 pitch spur, like the Kimbrough ones with all the holes in them. You just need 12 diff balls rather than 8.
