Spam

This and many other sites are getting hit with a lot of spam / obscene stuff at the moment - I've banned several hundred IP addresses and about 6/7 users so far today. To register with the website you need to image verify and confirm via email - so in that area there's not toooo much more I can do to make it safe and secure on here, but I will add a mandatory RC-related question which will enable me to better assess new users before they are able to post madness.

for the time being I've put all new users to moderate - meaning they can't post until I've manually assessed their status as genuine people.

Neil Driffil (rcracer) is now a global moderator to help me fight the spammers - thanks very much Neil.

And sorry to anyone that's been offended by what's been posted - we're doing everything we can to make oOple a nice friendly place for the whole family.

no probs Jimmy .... :)

jimmy 01-10-2008 04:09 PM

Hopefully there shouldn't be any more for the time - Neil and Paul Rotheram are on the case and most of the pm's I've received notifying me about spam have already been dealt with before I've even seen it - I'm really busy at work at the moment and finding it hard to keep on top of stuff like this so thanks everyone for their help.

Nice work Jimmy.

It's a bit sad that they have to put that stuff on a family site,

niggs98 01-10-2008 04:19 PM

joking aside im sure that any that does get through can be pm'd to one of the 3 of you to get sorted asap as im sure some of the younger members parents wouldnt be very impressed at seeing some of the stuff that has hit your site today although im sure ben would of loved it with his new sock :woot:

jimmy 01-10-2008 04:42 PM

haha, yeah exactly Nathan, it's laughable but it's not 'funny' - I don't want that crap on my website and don't want people to be put off visiting because of it. deleting that crap when I'm at work isn't exactly easy when there's madness coming up on my screen!
A search for any of the IP addresses shows that it's all over the internet - though the actual screen names might be randomly generated.

Northy 01-10-2008 05:16 PM

Bugger, I've been away EMC testing all day (and will be all week, and next week) and have missed all the madness

 Monty pithon are ace.:woot:

C'mon, when you have a title like that, it had to happen!! :p

jimmy 01-10-2008 07:39 PM

thanks for those who've offered to help moderate - I don't want people tripping over each other though just yet so I'm going to see how it goes but I will certainly need more help as the forum grows and I'll definitely be in touch.

I've added a question to the registration process- this attack is massive with some forums getting 150 new users today. apparently this question (what is your first RC vehicle in my case) should help knock the spammers on the head as they will say something like 'cupcake' or something and I'll pounce on them

rcracer 01-10-2008 07:50 PM

its just crazy everytime you look theres a new user registering, random user names aswell

Darren Boyle 01-10-2008 09:14 PM

WE diid the same thing on our club forum a while ago Jimmy - ask the car related question, and boy do you get some cracking answers from the spammers, we ask them what model of car they use currently, so far the best answer has to be "XXX Porn", since we nearly thought it was the latest 2wd from Losi after the XXX CR, but we do get some really nuts answers, but thankfully a fairly clean (not fully) forum due to it!!

jimmy 01-10-2008 09:18 PM

The last registered user put 'Tamiya Falcon' - the prevous few put 'test' - so I assume the last one is geniune
Hopefully vBulletin will sort out the problem with image verification soon so things will get back to normal
