540 or 550 motor?

Hi All,

I'm looking at getting a 2wdf SC with a view to running it whenever I'm able to get to a club who does them and possibly enter a couple of national rounds too.

I've heard of people running the 550 motors, but mainly in 4wds so was wondering if either 540 or 550 was better, or needed, for the 2wds.

Is there an advantage to going up to the bigger 550s?

Thanks

I don't think there is a need to running a 550 motor in the 2wd shortcourse. They are all quite light and don't need the extra power/ cooling of the 550 motors.

I have run everything from a 10.5 to a 7.5 motors that I have used in my buggies and they have been fine, even on the big tracks like coventry they have perfectly useable.

I reckon to much power in the 2wd scts is a waste, they are much more controllable with a softer motor.

You would have a job putting a 550 motor in a 2wd sc truck as most 550's have a 5mm shaft and pinions in most 2wd's are 48dp and nearly everyone of them has the 1/8-3.12mm shaft hole.plus you don't need the extra torque a 550 motor has,the 540 is all you need,I've run 3 seasons of sc nationals with the same old 10.5 and a 8.5 at Coventry dirt as you run out of speed down their main straight..unless your running a desc410 without the front driveshafts in I wouldn't bother..

I run a slash 4x4 with a castle 3800KV 4 pole and have been looking at other motors to try and gear up a bit for more top end, do the 550s run cooler then? I also read that to compare BL motors you need to go by WATTS and not KV.....is that right?
