Braking questions

Does anyone know if the gearing or the brand of motor will effect the braking performance?

My Aero is very poor on the brakes compared to my K1 and the only difference is my K1 uses a V3 6.5t and Aero an HPI 7.5t apart from that, same speedo, settings and gearing?

obviously different motors have different resistance... so, to answer your question, yes.

Also different strength rotor magnet, due to varying rotor diameters and magnet properties. Smaller dia is an "rpm" rotor, larger is a torque rotor, which should have a stronger breaking feeling over the different rotor in the same wind can.
Also the winding has many variables which will affect braking differences, as well as manufacturing process that is different between brands.

Fortunately ESC's allow some level of adjustment to get it feeling how you like it.

Maybe it's the aerodynamic covers on the shock tops causing it - I'll ask Tom

I painted mine orange so they wouldn't affect it!

The thing is Neil I have the braking set to 100% but it just won't stop. My k1 with the same setting stands on its nose. Maybe I should try a different motor and see how that works.

Swap motors and then try again - definitely makes a difference.

The reduced drag from the shock tower covers could be giving some negative effects on stopping force.
Did the manual say not to charge above 1.21 gigawatts in case you hit warp speed?

:p

Unfortunately I couldn't get in touch with Schumachers top man, so I asked Ben Jemison what he thought to the idea:

Something isnt right if your getting such poor brakes. I run a 5.5 with brake at around 30-40% and it stops quick.

Id start from scratch.

Reset esc to default settings. Recalibrate your radio with all trims/epa's at 0 and the timing down on the can.

If you still dont have strong brakes after doing this im stumped.

It might be a aero but it would need to get upto 81mph so no chance of time travel there

I'd suggest the motor swap. were they both new motors?

Different brand and price motors have differing performance, of course, but you should still get some/good breaking on the HPI. Having not run one i'm not sure if they feel any weaker of stronger than any other brand. Richard Lowe may offer some advice if you see him track side? I'm not sure if you need to make any esc software setting tweaks to increase the breaks on that motor?

Is it the same ESC that have been moved from one car to the other, or two of the same model ESC in each car?

I had this with my reventon when I changed firmware. Full brakes would leave the car gently coasting to a halt. Re-flashing, re-calibrating and re-programming fixed the issue.

Also, does the state of the capacitor have any effect on brakes?

Danosborne6661 17-01-2014 02:35 PM

What ESC is it? With the Hobbywings, if you don't set 'Reverse strength' to maximum you won't actually get full brakes! Even without reverse enabled! Bit of a glitch but could be something as small as that.

It is a Hobbywing V3 with everything set to 100% as the older GrandTurismos were the same. admittedly in my other cars they are the HPI V3 which is meant to be the same esc. The only variable is the motor.

However I will re set everything again and try this weekend.
