Which camera
 

Looking for some info on getting a camera, I've looked into bridge an DSLR cameras an come to the conclusion that as it's only gonna be used for things like taking photos of the dog an maybe the odd RC race an such that I'm gonna go with a bridge camera.

Only looking to spend between £100-£150 but not sure which is a prefered brand to get so any help guys would be much appreciated

I recently did the same & researched it a bit too much:bored: (although ultimately went with an advanced compact over a bridge).

Canon currently have £30 cashback on the SX510 which brings it down to £170 on Amazon. Or the same deal on the SX280 which has a bit less zoom. Both decent cameras from what I gather:thumbsup:

Look at the 'older' Canon dSLR's like the 350D/400D. They're probably about 8 years old now but very good still. They should go fairly cheap on eBay.

It'll knock the socks off compacts or bridge cameras, plus you can get loads of different types of lenses. If you're gonna be taking pictures at distance then a good 200mm telephoto lens is ideal.

Yeah a bridge camera will be no good in most light situations for action stopping RC shots. It will simply be too slow to get anything sharp.

As has been suggested a lower end DSLR from Canon or Nikon will be a good choice, or look at something like the 1000D, or second hand.

Yeah a 350D is getting on for 9-10 years old though, but depending on how old this is, and how much use its had, should be fine with a sensor clean.
It will be miles better than any bridge camera. and you can get a longer reach lens when funds allow. Lenses are all usable in the future, and (on brand) lenses do hold their value.

Worth having a look at the used stuff at Wex, all comes with 6 month warranty too.

Yeah not bad, but I think you maybe able to get a little more for less.

The stock lens is alright but majorly lacks zoom, a telephoto lens with atleast 200mm will be useful, it may sound like too much but will allow real close ups of the cars, although saying that, on one of the ones I linked above it does start at 90mm which may actually be to close if its a small track but fine for taking pics out and about. Since the stock lens stops at 55mm, ideally you want the telephoto lens to start at 55mm or as close to as possible.

Another thing worth mentioning, the cheaper side of the dSLR market may struggle if your local RC club is indoors due to the lack of light. Spend £1000 on a dSLR and £2000 on a lense and it'll take awesome indoor shots :thumbsup:

Also theres the Canon 400D, 450D which were released after. They may not go for that much more and have some improvements over the previous but not massive differences. You do have to be a little careful, the shutters are rated to a certain amount of pictures, and can fail after that but to be honest the people who take 200,000+ photos probably wouldnt be owning an entry level dSLR, chances are most of them have had very little actual use.

for indoor rc shots you need 2 things
zoom lens +100 mm
& zoom lens that is very lightsensitive lower than f4 value and with a fixed f
cause you can't use the flashlight because it looks bad and the long zoomlens will cast shadow on the pictures in some cases
and the indoor tracks usually have a very low light in general

So you should get something like a 80-200mm lens that has a fixed f value lower than 4 ! These are usually top of the line and very expensive 1000-2000€
(for indoor rc shots lenses with higher than f4 value will simply not do the job, most of them will not have a fixed f value so when you zoom in the value becomes f8 or higher)
outdoor use you could get away with cheaper zoomlenses because there is more light outside, however the cheaper lenses will lack the sharpness from a top end zoomlens. So the light will look ok in the shot but you will never get a super sharp picture.


in short : taking "pro pictures" of RC is buying a top of the line and very expensive zoomlens
the camera itself ? any up to date and good working body will do the job (in combination with a top end lens.)
So spend your money on the lens ! not the body

Sorry a bit late on the post but up till a few months ago all I used was a nikon p5100 bridge camera for rc photo's they are good as longs as you accept it is not a dslr. More then good enough for er cars and dogs pictures .
If tou are on facebook look up rc photos more before August this year are taken with a bridge camera.
