Carpet Offroad Race in the US!
 

Hey guys and gals,

I'm trying to get an invitational style race going at OCRC over here in Southern California. In an effort to make it interesting, (and to try to lure some of you over from across the pond) I'd like to cover our track in astroturf, or carpet, or whatever it is that is often used on outdoor tracks in England. :thumbsup: Anyways, I'd like it to be run similar to the old Reedy Race format with invitational and open classes. I wanted to see what you guys thought of the idea and if you had any suggestions on how to blow this race up. Right now we're planning on April of next year.

it would suit us brits more if i was on astro, but it becomes inconsistant and you get so much grip roll and have to use plastic tyres, clay is the big attraction for us. :thumbsup:

Yes we dream of clay tracks over here, and maybe 1 day we may have 1, but there is nothing wrong with having astro tracks as well:thumbsup:

The outdoor tracks here seem to use many different types of astro turf, and all seem to have different grip levels, I think the short pile astro is very good.
Also indoor tracks use carpet, can't say what type, but it is usually very short and easy-ish to roll up, as most indoor tracks are not permanent.

I would like to come to socal again, me hometown area-ish, so keep us informed over here!!!!!:thumbsup:

Sounds like it's a case of the Grass is always greener..... or Astro in this case (boom boom)!

Everyone i know here loves the idea of racing on Clay as to be honest i think the cars are designed for that really - obviously they're tuneable to the point to make them work really well on Astro / Grass / High grip but personally i think a 2wd buggy really comes in to it's own on Dirt with big flowing jumps and elevation changes and anyone that's raced on it tends to love it!

I think the U.S guys would like Astro/Grass if they got used to it and i can understand wanting to try it as a change but overall it would be quite expensive to do for one meeting surely? I think the main issue would be you finding tyres that work - I can imagine Schumacer / Ballistic RC in the UK getting a huge order if you do go for it :lol: There aren't really any Proline, JC or Losi tyres that would work so it's worth checking that sort of stuff out too.

Are there any artificial playing surfaces you could try a car on? Aren't the American football pitches often Astro? Maybe get someone to send over some tyres for you to try and see what you think of it first?

Nick have you tried Losi IFRMAR studs on astroturf?

At some stage we used to run Losi tyres on certain astro but it really depends on the type, Silver Studs and Pins used to work Ok at Kidderminster but that was only really as there were sections of Clay and Tarmac which meant you really gained having the soft compound...

If it's all Astro i'm sure nothing will be better then Schumacher or Ballistic tyres.

On oure track the shumacher tires is a bit faster on the lap.
But the schumacher tires i horrible if you end up wrong in a jump! you just cant
compensate so much with the gas and brake in the air as you can with
Los IFMAR studs. ts all about controling the car in the air and this is maily the
problem in 2wd
