left handed? which transmitter help please.

Hi my son is a leftie! What do you other lefties use, sticks or wheel? He has been wrapping his hands around the wheel in an awkward way and it seems to be a disadvantage.
any advice appreciated.

mark christopher 23-11-2013 07:14 PM

im a lefty and use a steerwheel and throttle with left, wheel in right hand

some wheel transmitters allow left or right handed operation!

hotrodchris 23-11-2013 07:40 PM

The spektrum DX3R you can swap sides that the wheel is on!

davidmog99 23-11-2013 08:12 PM

thanks

I will have a look at the spektrum. Mr christopher its saturday night and ive had a beer or two. Do you mean in your post above that you use a normal wheel transmitter in the normal way?

hotrodchris 23-11-2013 08:22 PM

Yes with the spektrum the wheel can be mounted on either side of the transmitter one of the older sanwa wheel transmitters you can swap sides with the steering wheel as well.

sticks

Im going to switch the sticks around on a code radio i have knocking about. Anybody done this?i have read on rctech its easy with some radios, others need wires lengthened.
im sure he would have an advantage with his best hand steering!

fidspeed 26-11-2013 09:33 PM

dave

im a lefty too

I hold the tx in my left hand throttle with left index finger steer with right hand

as mentioned some txs can be swopped I find wheels are easier for juniors to get their head around don't expect miracles it takes time

futaba 3 pk can also be swopped and do appear cheaply on fleece bay occasionally

yup that's it

bigt 26-11-2013 09:46 PM

I bet he steers with his right hand on xbox just fine ? I know a few lefties that juggle(diablo) right handed no problem

adam_u 26-11-2013 10:37 PM

I'm a leftie and use conventional sticks, I've never felt it hampers me in anyway (no more hampered than usual that is!) and I really think it's a case of what you're used to through lots of practice. I don't see any problem in switching the sticks around, but I don't really think it's necessary IMHO...but whatever works for him I suppose :)

If he's already used to wheel then I'd say a left handed wheel set up would be the best option

emzy 27-11-2013 12:09 AM

I think using a transmitter is one of those things where you just learn it as you're given it. I figure that both of my hands are doing something anyway... it's like playing the piano in that respect.

If you're using a steering wheel anyway and you've got the option, let him see which feels more natural but I remember using one a few times and always just used it the "normal" right-handed way.

passy 27-11-2013 04:06 AM

I'm a leftie and use sticks. If I could go back in time 20 years I would probably use a 'normal' steerwheel with the right hand steering and the left on throttle. A much bigger choice of radios offer this combination. Stick transmitters for cars have been slowly disappearing over the years.

sticks

Thanks for the advice. Im not going to swap the sticks yet im going to see how it goes.
with the wheel hes been trying to hold it really awkwardly so he can steer with his left hand, looks like I will have to sell or swap the code for a lefty wheel.

Loheswaran 27-11-2013 08:42 AM

if you have the money

I think the top of the line ko is available as a leftie. I love ko radios.

diago999 27-11-2013 02:23 PM

I am actually right handed but due to being a gamer I prefer to use my right hand for the throttle and left for steering,

I bought myself an Abisma CR4T (which was the cheapest pistol radio price new that was convertable from left to right handed)

and its pretty good, Ive got on quite well with it.

Richard Lowe 27-11-2013 08:34 PM

Another lefty + regular stick layout user here!

Essexboyracer 27-11-2013 08:48 PM

Yeah, I'm a lefty and use sticks. Got a few rc cars as a kid, and my brain is now hardwired to use regular stick transmitters. I love my Hitec Eclipse pro car converted to frsky 2.4.

I am think of trying a wheel transmitter though, and fortunately would want the wheel on the right, as that's the hand that does steering for me :)

jaank 27-11-2013 11:26 PM

Does he use computer mouse with his left or right?
IMO, this seems to be the decisive factor.
I'm a leftie, can do most of stuff with both hands after a few fractures (lol), but always drive like a rightie with a pistol radio.

I would recommend Futaba 3PK. It's a really high grade radio compared to these chinese wonders, it can have the wheel on both sides and can be had relatively cheap.
