Col's quads
Continuing from the RHR unofficial flying club thread.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps6e5b8f5b.jpg Turns out this last one did more damage than first thought...! Along with several other crashes (at least 4 that night!) the damage to the KK2 was terminal. That night also cost me 7 props (!), 1 arm, 1 motor and 1 receiver, but I did do my first (and currently only...) successful flip so it was worth it! Spent this afternoon re-building and modifying some minor aspects that will hopefully mean less electrical damage in future crashes. New KK2 is now mounted on 2 layers of "Parma servo tape" so that it sits lower than before. This used to be the case with my old motors that had long shafts, but the sunnysky's are much shorter already - when the quad is upsidedown it was the KK2 that contacted before anything else. Old Turnigy motors (long shafts): http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...psf31df0be.jpg New SunnySky's (shorter shaft): http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps2777ff37.jpg Quad upside on floor: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps212eca75.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...psfee61af2.jpg Receiver "hidden" under topdeck: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps6670b712.jpg note this is missing an aerial so will have to be replaced. Unsure of range at the moment. KK2 "softmounted" onto topdeck: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...psb1bc7ab8.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps45b67b0d.jpg Initial flight in my back garden seem to show no difference in flight from the different mounting method. Things I've learnt (the hard way):

I've decided to bite the bullet and scratchbuild my next one - a Y tri.
Got another KK2 coming, along with a micro servo and some odds and sods. Just need to source some G10 or similar to make an upper and lower deck that will hold the wooden arms in place. Anyone know where I can find some? |
G10?

Top stuff! going to have a go at some flips with my kk2 450. Need to sort out settings on the kk2 first though, it yaws to the left when forward tilt and throttle is applied!
Keep us posted how you get on with the sunnysky 980's ive just put some 900's on my tbs frame. |
Top Tip on the ariel Col - hadn't though about it getting ripped off when an arm goes !
I use this stuff to make bits up - it's much easier to work with than Carbon Fibre Sheet. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-6mm-Fibr...item43bf3855cc Looking forward to the Tri - fancy a go myself at some point ! I like the 'Bat Bone' as it's simple to fix with wooden arms when it goes wrong! |
Thanks for the tips. I bought andy's 330 and when not in work will hopefully get it up and running. Last night I was looking at where to put the rx and kk2 on a spare 330 i bought and its tight on the frame. Managed to find some kids yoghurt pots that may be upto the job of protecting the kk2 but iv no free time to experiment with at the moment.
I did see on ebay a 3d printed case for the kk2 which could help things as well. Its good to share the tips. Col. |

Thanks for the link Andy - bought a couple of sheets! |
I have glass fiber sheets, kk2, motors, esc's, servo, male2male servo wires, receiver, kk2 3D printed case (very cool), 8x4.5 props so I think I have everything I need...
Just need to pull my finger out now:) |
Hi Col.
Where did you get the KK2 case from ? Andy |

Made to order, but arrived within 3 days. Not actually fitted it to the quad, or put a board in it yet but it seems pretty good. Slightly rough around the edges though |
