Malaysia - Vintage gathering anyone ?

Okay , lately I have been seeing members of this vintage forum flying across continents meeting up with other members and having some vintage fun. So here I am inviting you guys to come over to the tropics, the hot and sunny Malaysia. The pros:
Sunny tropical climate, a population that speaks English, good variety of foods, and a favorable exchange rate for the Euro, Pound, Aussie Dollar, US dollar etc..
Cons, its really really hot and humid !
Here area pics of the track I will bring you guys to.

Today is a major celebration, so no one was at the track except me, so I couldn't get a video shot of my Optima Mid. The car drove great, but I broke a front arm yet again..
We can have our own impromptu race..

Naushad 08-08-2013 02:53 PM

Right...I'll come.

I'd like to mix some nasi goreng with rc.

But first, I need a ticket.

Naushad 08-08-2013 02:56 PM

I wish I could have done some racing on eid...too bad I was working.

optiman 08-08-2013 04:34 PM

Interested, but we need; a real/doable date for the event, location of the track so we can search for hotels, booking, etc..

I live on the tropic so high humidity and heat is not a factor for me!!!!

jukeboxman 08-08-2013 10:58 PM

What a great venue.....and a country I would love to return to.

Nasi goreng, mee goreng, satay with all the trimmings, durian and iced kachang. Ipoh chicken and model car racing? Paradise!

alcyon 09-08-2013 02:57 AM

Jeez. I am amazed. Some of you know about the local dishes. Dont worry about hotels. Theere are plenty of budget hotels not far from the track. And you wont need to book. I have a car that can take 4 passengers to the track. I thinl 3 days will be good. But its got to be work days..to minimize the 1/8 scale pests .

jukeboxman 09-08-2013 07:12 AM

Not as amazing as you might think......my mother was born in Kampar, and i still have relatives there, we lived in Malaysia when my father worked for LLN ( electricity board) in Ipoh and Taiping, that was back in the 60's and 70's though have been back for holidays more recently.

DanB4 09-08-2013 08:07 AM

Would love to but my recent globetrotting has broken the bank!

Welshy40 09-08-2013 12:26 PM

You know what, we are going to have to all commit to one year actually doing this. The tracks you are showing are superb and would love to hit something like this.

DanB4 - you doing the Maritime event Winter series? Fancy hitting it with a vintage and joining me?

DanB4 10-08-2013 01:30 AM

I'd love to Welshy but living in Oman near Dubai currently limits my use of my collection so I made the most of it during our family holiday to Australia.

If I were home in the UK I'd be racing lots including joining you mate.

They are RC mad in Dubai. I recal a chap park in Camden outside Hobbystores and bought everything they had in stock to take back with him. Guess theres a track or two there.

You'd think so but no afraid not.....there's a rough attempt at an 8th off road track in the UAE but its not up to much....then there's a newish on road track in Dubai but they're just interested in going faster in a straight line than each other....it's mainly Helis and planes....lots of people have cars but they just bash them in the dunes and bling them for some strange kudos.

Surprisingly I met a vintage Tamiya nut here in Oman.

I've built a couple of on road circuits and tried educating them but they just don't get it.....next project is a small astro track in my back garden here if I can but just for me and a UK buddy over here.

I crave a nice 10th electric track. Needs to be indoors really.

Thats not good, and tbh not much near me either and gone are those days where id go all over the country. Still my project on my zxr is almost at an end, rear gearbox done, top decks done, shock towers done, and all most tub done. Still means now ive got to race it :-)

DanB4 11-08-2013 01:30 AM

There was actually a big Kyosho event held at a custom built track in the heart of a Park in Dubai a few years ago (I was still in the UK) but when one of the Sheikhs got beaten by somebody with a little bit of talent from overseas, he spat his dummy and closed it down. ... apparently it's still there but nobody can use it and it's just a wreck of a place now. ...... bizarre.

That's the rumour I heard but I can fully believe it. Some locals from Dubai travelled down to Muscat when I built the 1st on road track here in 2011... they had all the best equipment and were full of name dropping and stories of regular TITC and other globetrotting escapades. .... when I beat them all they started being really negative (and I am no Ronald Volker)....we never saw them again. .... that's the mentality of some I'm afraid...... like the small group of awkward racers we get at every club but just wealthier and more spoilt. :eh?:

Rant over I love it here just miss my racing. .... that's the main reason why I now get my rc fix from vintage restorations I reckon.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread Alcyon sorry. .... next project is an off road track which I hope will kick start some racing here.....3rd time lucky maybe?? After all I persuaded them to invest in the top of the line AMB/MyLaps system which is sat idle now.

Dont worry dan, interesting stories and love to hear more. And jukeboxman, cool to hear you have some connections to malaysia. Well RPK is living in England now, he is my idol. If anybody want to propose dates, please do so, I will propose some dates soon.

Welshy40 11-08-2013 09:41 AM

Dan,

Yes i believe it, they dont like losing and think they are better than everyone else when in reality they are not.

Still i need to persuade my mrs to let me go.

I think and please everyone put your thoughts in, carpet like that superb looking one above would be more beneficial as the cars will need minimal maintaining and cleaning but am thinking on some cars are more prone to issues than others.

alcyon 11-02-2014 08:40 AM

Ok since this is forgotten, I propose the dates of 10 and 11 march 2014. The weather is hot and sunny in Malaysia now, and the track operator says its ok.
