Best new motor for an old procat?

I have a procat which I dug up last year from my loft. I want to get it going again with a view to messing around with it but also maybe a vintage race.

I want a motor that will give it a better turn of speed than a std 540 motor, but not some new era monster, that will trash the transmission and flatten my cells too quick. With a view to being legal and competitive in vintage comp too.

Oh. Don't want to spend much either!

Hi Andy, I ran a 19 turn in mine in the York vintage series last year (and won ;)) but it was a bit steady to be honest.

When I went for practice and ran in the normal 4wd heat I put a 10 turn in it! I was just steady with the power :woot:

10 turn. Crumbs, don't think they had better than 16 turn when I raced! Was it still competitive with todays models?

But 19 turn is around what I was thinking, just needed somebody to confirm that. I have a speedmaster silver star esc. That should be ok?

I have a 19turn in my optima mid, with new cells it's good, but less so with the 1700's I was running. I'd got a vintage 14*3 V2 style motor, they do some budget ones for less than £30.

Hmmm, understatement?

I was happy running a 19 in my XLS, like Dan says with new cells - much more and I was afraid it was gonna pull itself in bits.

A modern 19 is not far off what was being run in modified back-in-the-day.

That's ace - I got one for my RC10 ofat'bay, not run it yet. I melted one years ago running a 14, may be wise not to go below 19 with that bad-boy.

It was ace with the 10 turn in. When I ran it that night it was like a shake down and it kept falling in bits etc :woot: Still made the A main though :D

I think I was upto 4th in the final when the crashback bands snapped

Anyway, when we were running 19 turn in the vintage class I could have easily still got it into mod A with the times I was doing, even top half of the grid :woot:

not sure if the silverstar will cope with a 19t. i used to run one in my procat years ago and they weren't rated that high (old 17t seems to ring a bell). the goldstar was the beefed up version.

you could always get it upgraded with some more powerful fets, that's what i did when it blew the first time, then it handled hotter motors with ease.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have found two packs of phil greeno matched 1700 SCE cells. I charged them for 25 mins and they actually powered the procat with a 27T motor for about 5mins. Not bad for cells that haven't been charged for about 18 years!!!

yokomo pro stock 17t

Bloody ell i remember greeno cells.

Last time i used a lazer zx with 1700 scrs i used a 17 quad mg motor. It was quick at cowdenbeath .
My mate has a twister 15 dble and its still quick.

Phil Greeno SCE were the best when I raced! A massive 1700mah a step up from the lazer matched 1200mah SCR cells I used before them. The SCR seamed to deliver more puch, but I used to "dump" in the last minute!

Looking at todays cell capacity, I guess dumping will be a thing of the past.

I've got a team tanaplan 15x2 you could have for a few quid - it'll need skimming and a clean :D
