Plastic wing???
 

Hi there all - I have the following Q for you :) Are there any non-lexan wings available? Looking for something tough but flexible to sustain lots of abusive, uncontrolled landing on my XXX basher ;) Brand/part# would sure help. Thanks!

Academy SB wing, part no: SB-007. Your model shop can order it from Horizon if you're in the UK or MRC if you're on t'other side of the pond

Academy wing is not currently available here in the UK, we have had them back ordered for over 6 months now.....

Depending how things go, I could have a plastic (Nylon based) wing for sale within a few weeks.

Designed using the latest aerospace technology it will give around 10% more downforce (I didn't want to much, or you just overload the rear) but critically it will have over 65% less drag - better battery life and top speed as a result.

Should be plenty strong enough for bashing too. I'll let you know how it goes, and I will test thoroughly before releasing.

Any pics? Would be intensely interested! Any idea on price yet?

what happened to those old yokomo nylon wings?

Having bunch of wing mounts isn't bad idea if you want use plastic wing. They are designed for lexan wings which are lighter and more flexible.

Might pay to go back to old school piano wire to attach the wing then :)

Yeah I remember times when was Losi XX hot new and there was also old good asso. Nice wing mounting it had however removing shell without removing wing was impossible =o)

I will also produce a number of different mounts for a more aerodynamic mounting solution, as well as obviously being better suited to the nylon wing. Problem is with the data I have available this will only be for Kyosho, Losi, Associated and Schumacher buggies initially.

For most buggies, the standard mount (designed for the standard polycarbonate wings) will actually suffice however.

sparrow - Unfortunately I have no photos as I don't even have a prototype myself yet. All I have is literally hundreds of pages worth of geometric data from my aerodynamics calculation and analysis and a computer model.

So I'm just waiting on China basically. If anyone knows of any good contacts for injection moulding - please let me know. My main issues are relatively low batch numbers (hundreds rather than thousands).

Either way, I'm hoping I can get this sorted within next few weeks as both my 8th and 10th scale wings have been designed and waiting for months now.

i'm totally fed up with having to fit a new rear wing every few weeks.

with lipo, weight is no longer an issue, so i'd also like a nice tough rear wing - i'd probably buy one!

The plastic wings I've seen have been pretty naff - weak and poor downforce. If you want a strong, tough wing with good downforce then the EDIT wing is the best I've ever used. It's made from some thick lexan so doesn't need bracing and doesn't deform like most wings do at speed.

Has anyone tried adapting plastic containers like milk bottles or sandwich boxes etc. there are a variety of shapes and widths in the cheapy shops from around 50p that I have seen locally.
Might be cheaper in the end if like me your mostly upside down with the buggy jumps Ha Ha;):)

That's a trend that seems to always resurface every couple of years. In 93 it was the done thing on Yokomos.
Looks utterly rubbish, doesn't work terribly well and the plastic from the containers shatters, leaving bits of wing all over the track.

hy does no one do a tenth wing scaled down from a 8th one?

Kyosho do one, but it just doesn't look right on a 1/10 scale.

One of the companies like 3racing or something do one, its very strong, looks crap though. Seems like a very good choice for bashing but not racing.

I basically run my XXX on an 8th scale track... the car spends a LOT of time upside down, the wing suffers quite a bit. I ain't really chasing killer looks or low weight, I'm more interested in a budget-oriented, reliable solution. I also thought about doing my own stuff out of, whatever, plastic bottles, plexi, you name it but then again if I can source a few $6 wings from Asia I'll be a happy camper ;)
