K1 Electronics Advice Please

I have a 2nd hand CAT K1 on the way to me and could do with a little advice on the electronics.

I am returning to the sport from the days of 40 Meg radio's and brushed motors so all this new tech is baffeling but I have shortlisted the following:-
  • Core RC Code 2.4GHz 3-Channel FHSS LCD Stick Radio
  • Speed Passion Reventon-Pro ESC Grey V3.0 MMM 10.5R Motor Combo
  • Turnigy nano-tech 5100mah 2S3P 65~135C Hardcase Lipo Saddle Packs
  • Futaba BLS451 Servo

What do you guys think of this setup? Will it fit in the K1 and could I do better by spending a few more pounds?

Any advice appreciated!

They will all fit in, you will have to pay good attention to fitting the receiver and esc, but they will go in.

Yep will all fit nice brushless and lipo is a culture shock but your get used to it as for 2.4 just think no more crystals ...

All looks good, the only bit I would change is the radio.
I have seen quite a few people start of with the Code RC and similar radios and all have been changed pretty quick. Unfortunately stick radios tend to be a bit more expensive, Spektrum do a stick handset for £60 but I havn't seen it being used, and you'd have to get a receiver on top of that. If you can stretch to a Sanwa Gemini X then they are very good. The other alternative is try a steerwheel?

You could also look at Gens Ace Lipos, you can get them from Giant Shark in the UK, are very good and pretty much the same price as the Turnigy ones.

I dont know where your planning to use it, but a 10.5 for a 4wd sounds extreeeemly bland. Most people run at minimum of 7.5t if not quicker.

I run a 5.5t in my sx3 on astro, but a 6.5t on anything thats bumpy.

Radiowise, the core is a little on the cheap side but will prob do the job. If you decide to go wheel, you'll prob have more choice and will cost you less. Funnily enough, I have a spektrum dx3s with receivers I'm going to sell. Let me know if your interested.

The Core rc radio is more than capable of doing the job, but lots of people have had issue's of interferance with them, including my son. There are probably lots of people that have had no issues and are very happy with them.

Reventon Pros a good buy, top spec and not a fortune. 10.5 will be fine and once you are used to it, a bit of timing and boost can be added via the speedo.

Nano Tech Lipo's again very good for the money. For a similar budget you can get Gens Ace saddle packs which are BRCA approved, incase you fancy doing any Regionals.

Never a bad word said about Futaba.

40MHz now days is not such a bad thing to be on as alot of people have jumped to 2.4GHz, so not alot of crystal clashes. There are alot of 40MHZ radios available 2nd hand, and most can be converted at a later date to 2.4GHz by one way or another.

Edit-Sorry repeated alot of what badger5 said.

jimmy maddison used a 10.5 at the worksop players, definatly not slow with some speedo timing added

Hi ramdrive

Hope this Can help u:) i use the Reventon pro
.just use the Stock program, Think the name is "Stock 11v" or som.
About the motor, i will GO for the 7,5T, i Think after som time you end there anyway. Just use a SP motor for the reventon,it Can start to "blink" and drive slow, if you dont use a SP motor, NOT saying it will, but it Can do.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I selected the 10.5 as I have been away for a while and thought this would get me started and later I would move to a 6.5...

I had a think about the radio and just picked up a second hand Ko Propo Vantage Esprit 2 with 2.4 Frysky Conversion for less then the Core RC Code, I hope it will be OK!

This one: http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130227

So now I am thinking along these lines:-
  • Ko Propo Vantage Esprit 2 with 2.4 Frysky Conversion - Purchased
  • Speed Passion Reventon-Pro ESC Grey V3.0 MMM 10.5R Motor Combo
  • 2 x Gens Ace 5100 25C 1s 3p LiPo Saddle Packs
  • Ko Propo PS-2173 FET Servo - Purchased

Again any input appreciated.

Could you put a link up for those batteries, to make sure they are the correct ones?

Hi Kent,

Thanks for the images very useful. One question how are you connecting the wires to the back of the motor? It looks like right angled connector of some sort.

Thanks

If thats the motor i think it is, it uses 3.5mm plugs, he's just soldered the wires on to the plugs at right angles. They should come in the box with the motor.

I've done the same with mine.

looks good I run Core RC and have both Reventon pro and Orion R10 Pro that I swap between both great

Motors 7.5 R although I did try a 5.5 R which was madness.

1 thing we have noticed is if you use Savox 1258 servos they can draw quite a bit of voltage and can play havoc with the Core RC and sometime spectrum Gear, and cause Jitter I get it a lot

so I ended up having to fit a CAP to the receiver.
