Removing gears from 410 diff

I read that Hupo removed one of the sticks and internal gears from his diff at one point.

Has anyone else tried this?
Results?

I presume that it will roll lighter but will this put too much pressure on the one thats left?

Is'nt that the same on the RTR 210th oil-filled geared diffs?

Would be interesting, if that works!

[theory]It'll be noisier, wear faster, and may lead to cracking under high impulse loads (landing under power, over tight slipper). On the upside, the drive line inertia will be lower and it'll reduce the effective stiffness/drag of the diff. There are a few other things that might happen, but it's been years since I've done any gearbox design, so not going to dig out any text books! [/theory]

I've got several spare diffs/prop shafts, we can set some up and see what happens?

removing may not reduce drag.
by removing a relatively free component, you are replacing it with resistant oil.

with 2 pins whisking the oil up, might be less cavitation with 1 set of pins resulting in more consistent oil around the gear teeth.

possibly.

FWIW, I tried it. Built up two diffs, 7000 cst oil, one with 4 gears, one with just the 2.
Sounded like I had filled it with gravel. Notchy as hell. I suspect this is one for drivers with a big bag of spare diffs. I popped the extra 2 gears back in ASAP.

odd. I have the RTR stadium truck and it comes with only 2 gears.
rebuilt it with 3k diff oil and its quieter than my 210 ball diff
and many people have commented on how smooth my ball diff is. its even recently been rebuilt with new plates and ceramic balls.

I doubt they would sell it like that in the RTR's without full testing

Unless of course the motors in the RTR cars are gentle enough to not give a problem? 13.5 aren't they? I'm running 6/7/8.5T motors. And it was a run in diff. Not worn out, just run in!

FWIW, the RTR 210 diff i took apart last night seemed fairly smooth before i stripped it down (brand new)

Should have left it with 2 gears and run it back to back (both 210s have similar, low turn motors in)

You can remove 2 gears and a shaft from the DEX410 diff assembly without concern for gear life.
It is a interesting tuning option, allowing you to 'free up the diff' whilst using the same diff oil. It also has a nice side effect of a 'lighter rotating' mass, giving the car more initial acceleration.

Some of the setups we have online show that we used the 2 gear diff config, i think they are dirt setups mainly in the USA.

We have tried them on astro too, but as always its down to driver preference.
