Was the tire glued wide or not? I've driven these tires at the EOS (carpet) - grip out there was insane so everyone glued them wide... except for me the first time around  (I only had narrow front wheels with me). I had 3/4 dBoot insert in there to keep it a bit in shape but after a few runs I cut almost all spikes off (from which it started understeering a little after a bit of wear but at least the drive was stable).
At the second EOS event I went to, I glued them wide and put 1/2 or 3/4 insert in there - the lower wall of the tire meant that it responded more directly, the steering had more feel to it. To prevent grip-roll I put glue on the outside wall of the tire, and from there on it felt very nice. After a few batteries the sharpest edges were off and the tire became even better: it still steered very quick and felt nimble but less snappy than when new.
I haven't tried them on Astro, but I can imagine here you might also glue them wide but don't use the glue on the outside wall of the tire... Perhaps you can try both out by not glueing the inside tire bead in place (and switching the bead from narrow to wide?) :eh?:
