DF-03 Alu gearbox

Does anyone know why there is no aluminium gearbox upgrade out there?
The suspension arms on the gearbox are attached 'wobbely' and break, no alu part exists, so i have to create my own stiffener??

This helps A LOT :

I ordered this part too, but it does not solve my problem.

The gearbox stiffener should be attached to the shock tower, but why its not done and kept 'wobbely' i dont know...

Hello Sitmark.

I know what you mean. Last sunday I broken the third gear box of this year. I broken it always in the join betwen the shock tower and the gear box. The tab where you screw the shock tower with the gearbos is made with 3 very thin plastic walls and is obvious that cant support the stress long time.

I think that this is due to the design of the rear suspension. If you assembly the rear shochks as the manual indicate, the join bettwen the shock and the shock tower is far from the joint bettwen the gear box and the shock tower, so this tap of the GB should support stress in two directions, vertical and horizontal to the rear of the car. I just move the shocks to the rear of the car and reasembly the shock tower (Mine is from Five Stars) and now both joints are in the same vertical plane so in theory now the gearbox tab should suppor only stress in one direction. I'll probe it in a couple of weeks in my next meeting.

I hope you understand what I mean, my english is not as good as I wish.

Regards.

Fernando. :)

Is the problem that the wishbones move back breaking the gearbox?
If so you could try one of these instead of what Stefke suggested (both won't fit together unfortunately)
3 Racing Front Brace

There's a pic of it installed halfway down the thread in the link below:
BelstenToo's DF03

Hope this helps

No, it is like fernando describes...

I dont really understand the answer he gives for the problem, but when i can, I will put a picture of my solution online.

I attached 3 strong cables to adsorb the shocks and divert them straigth to the body. The shocktowers are the very solid GPM ones.

P.S.: The gearboxes broke as peetbee described, but i solved that with front and rear gearbox suspension braces, as he gives in his post. It is the breaking of the link between the shocktower and rear gearbox as fernando describes

I was still working on my reply when Fernando posted his and I didn't think to check!

I have no idea how to help with that sorry!

I filled up the empy channels on that part where it breaks with some homemade epoxy. Not sure how much it helps but I'm sure it's stronger than stock. Sitmark, I have an idea what you're saying but would love to see the pics of your mod.

I'll post a picture this weekend, I might add your idea of epoxy too :D

If you see how I have strengthened the gearbox, u'll see why I am amazed that none of the tuning company's or tamiya itself tought of that....

I made a few pictures of my solution....

It is not that good looking but does the trick:thumbsup:

The photo's seem unclear, i'll try to make better ones :s
