Wireless Routers

(some may have read the following on FB)

Currently have a Netgear WGR614v7

Any wireless to PC/Laptop buffs on here?
------------------------------------------------
Here's the problem.

Two Win7 laptops keep dropping the wireless. One's OK this morn. My Vista LT is OK. If I LAN both Win7's via the router they both go to the web. Good signals on both Win7 LT's but try to connect and they fail using the connect to icon. Haven't got another free wireless signal to use, just the house one. Reboot the Netgear and then they connect via the wireless.

The other day all 3 LT's were connecting from the same room downstairs with wireless router were it has always been.

Just booted up a Win7 LT this morning and it connected without issue twice.

Do I get a new router or try to solve the issue?

Hi mate, try this.

Go into your router via 1 of your computers when its connected.

You do this through the browser usually by typing in the i.p address of the router ie 192.168.0.1 Should be this or similar.

Then find the channel options in the router settings. You can force it to use the channel off your choice. Pick a channel from 1-9. A lot of laptops seem to struggle to connect on double digit channels. Also if other wifi networks nearby are on the same channel this can also cause issues, so try pick a unique channel.

My router did this too when using certain android devices. The channel was on 12, they seem to choose at random each time the router is reset.

Hope this helps.

Virgin. They have checked signal to modem and tweaked it.

Link score on 9 is worse than it was on 11 :woot: Moved to 1 and link score is just higher than 11 :D

We'll see how it goes over the weekend

What method of wireless encryption are you using on the router? If you can set the router to automatically select the wireless channel then it'll change when the channel it's using becomes congested.

When you say the laptops are dropping the wireless, does Windows claim they're no longer connected, or are you saying they've dropped wireless because you can't browse the Internet for example?

Just a quick one but is the routers firmware up to date ?

encryption / will have to check

dropped wireless because you can't browse the Internet for example? / Yes. I can reboot LT but won't connect but if I reboot the router I can connect.

I can see connection but when I try to connect it says not able to.

No.

If it were my router playing up, I'd take a back up of the config, upgrade the firmware and then factory reset it and start again.

If the laptop claims to still be connected by wireless but you can't browse the web (which is what I think you agreed was the issue above), we need to know:

1) if the laptop has an IP address
2) if the laptop can ping the router

encryption = WPA-PSK [TKIP]

Can't see an auto select option in the settings

Wireless signal is strong. But windows can't connect. Wireless card on LT says all OK when windows (vista) can't establish a wireless signal to the router. If I use a lan cable to the router the LT can connect.
