Issues with speed passion revention speedo?

Anyone had any issues with these ? Last night I noticed the dreaded electronics smell, and was getting issues with the speedo cutting out, I had a good look at it and nothing appears to be shorted out, and nothing is fouling the fan... Do these things have a thermal shut off /protection ?

Andrew Twigger 18-02-2013 04:22 PM

They do have a thermal cut out which is 95 degrees on the pro version with mod 2 software (can't speak for the others). Whether you have this enabled would depend on your settings.

Just be careful going mad with your DMTS 3.0 (timing advance) settings. I copied a team driver set up for the speedo, but ran it with an LRP X12 (which run higher advance than an SP for example) and it was getting red hot. Eventually the capacitor let go which made me realise I had it set up incorrectly.

How hot were the speedo/motor when you experienced the smell?

I think it does yes

but just having a look on the speed passion website it doesn't say for sure.

if your concerned about heat cutoff, stick the fan on(if it came with one)
unless its your motor thats over heating

but you should be able to check the heat levels of the esc with the program card

I am running the fan already it didn't feel that hot but the smell is coming from the capacitor, so I wonder if its that that is on its way.... Running the mod2 software, and an SP V3 6.5 motor. I hope you can get spare capacitors mind that said they don't look special.

This SP capacitor will do you. Personally, I would make sure all your settings are ok before running again.

You could of course purchase a capacitor of the correct specifications from RS electronics or the likes, but I wouldn't be qualified to tell you what to get :)

Going to plug it in now cheers folks

Hi Richie, there is a thermal cut off as Twigger says. You have Mod2 software on, so just go to the thermo setting, and see if it is enable or disabled.

Also, check the fan is blowing down on to the speedo, rather than sucking away from it.

Checked and fan is as per above, thermal cut off at 95 deg. I have moved the whole wiring setup and it looks much better, moved the capacitor it now lies on its side on top of the servo, so will see how it goes as they say.... Back over to Nathan's car to clean and check as he said he threw a drive shaft on the final,,, all good fun.
