RC RALLYCROSS

Now don't shoot me out of the sky for being naive - I'm still finding my feet in this crazy RC world....but does such a thing as RX exist!? I know 1/8th rally cross/ nitro is a big deal here and abroad but just can't believe that such a thing does not exist considering the popularity of X-games and world rallycross champs & the fact that you can buy specific rally models.

I have heard some people talk about putting touring car shells on buggies for a giggle a while back but surely there is scope and interest for a proper class with specific rules & cars for sprint races like the big boys do!?
As I said I'm really thinking out loud - maybe its a weird little cult that already exists but no one talks about in the RC world!?!
Any thoughts and abuse are welcome :)
cheers friends!!

This happened years ago but never stayed the distance like the established classes.

Rallycross bodyshells were available for buggies & we used to race them on flat(ish) tracks. I remember having a Sierra Sapphire & a 205GTi for my ProCat back in the day...

I think it was this that the current 190mm touring cars were developed from - because people wanted something more 'scale'.

Now they race on super smooth tracks 5mm off the ground & talk about how many RPM their 'boost' cuts in at...:bored:

I think short course brings very similar thrills - side by side off road racing:thumbsup:

I've been banging on about this for a while, used to mod the shock mounts to accept RL bodies, Fiesta XR2 etc etc, was GREAT FUN....

Unfortunately, the french think there's only tarmac rally (some nice bodies):

This is more like it though he could use some competition:

And finally, something to make you drool (who's going to be the the one to start a championship):

Would love to race these, jack up an old tourer with rally body and tyres.. would be best on dirt tracks for the slippy sideways action

Top one is actually rally game, 8th rally x cars but designed for tarmac. they are tarmac circuit cars, states call em GT

Personally I think the cars look ace but I think the Japanese have the right idea when it comes to this class of racing. The night time snow racing looks a proper laugh. Loads of cars to choose from too especially from Tamiya, DF03, TT01, XV01 etc.

there was a BRCA national championship for rally cars.

schumacher rally blocks or mini pins and a heat at worksop indoors!!

Frecklychimp 22-01-2013 07:13 PM

Can remember it Mark,

bit fuzzy, thought it was an RRCI championship tbh, can remember Will Mitcham kicking butt with the Predator DTM/Streetwise rally version.

at the time we had a large following of HPI Rally's at the local club, great fun and really brought the kids into racing.

I did build a Losi Rally Weapon up with a slipper to run in the series but the class died overnight.

All of the manufacturers at time went into it too so was a surprise and a great shame.

Traxxas have fairly recently released a 1/10th Rally car but it's a LCG Slash SCT with a generic hatchback shape jelly mould body, would probably handle at speed and definitely jump better than a scale saloon version.

pffft you 1/10th guys are dropping behind here :)

Us micros have been doing rally cross events for a while ;) (This is a video from WORM, but we do it as well at wycombe)

I remember the short lived rallycross days, hugely entertaining and looked great. I still have the mounts off my Top Force Ego in the box and a body shell somewhere. I have a Metro 6R4 shell mounted on a Tamiya touring car too.

Could be a good laugh to see a heat or two oneday on grass and tarmac section's, anyone else interested ?

You must get disqualified for tripping and landing face 1st in the scenery:lol:

With the brushless & lipo combos we have access to now - it just lends itself to replicating the monster horsepower days of the Group B Rallycross era.

I raced several replicas back in the day - Gollops 6R4 ( I have a pic of my Optima shelled car sat on his roof at Lydden), Welch's Xtrac Astra, and Arne Rasmushaugen's 6R4 as well. Never got round to doing a Mark Rennison DSRM RS200.....

I guess modified TC chassis would be the best option (at last they do have a use!) as they are more "scale" than the buggies.

Just need a bodyshell supplier (Kamtec perhaps?) and some suitable tracks - not too rough and "jumpy" but mixed surface.

Would love to see it make a resurgence - even with the current crop of "jellymould" aerodynamic bodyshells......

There is actually a good range of bodies out there for 190/200mm

HPI still have the moulds for most of theirs so will make to order if not in stock, Tamiya obviously have some real nice scale bodies from across eras, Retro-Racing do Escort mk1/2, Cortina mk1 and opel kadett, Control Freax did RS200 and 6R4 but i think they are no longer trading, Carson Audi S1's are out there and our Czech brothers have a varied range of cool rally bodies to import.

I always fancied racing Tamiya mini's as a rallycross class on loose surfaces, would be great fun... wouldn't jump but great for sliding into corners!

The scale cars look great but i think they need weight adding to stop them hopping around so much.

I tried a stock Tamiya TL01 with mild brushed gear in around an astro track and it went well but being able to slide would be fun!

Was thinking an indoor horse arena training type surface would work well with some small obstacles and hops, maybe surface changes... i know a venue and could access track gear but i think it'd be a long shot to make it worth trying even as a one off.

Perfect!

I fully agree with Hog on TC's needing a better use! Audi S1 bodies, 2WD front shocks all round and 6.5T motors with lumpy tyres... scale Grp B rallying FTW!
