MRT PT's do not work in the cold!

Numerous issues today with MRT PT's not working in the cold! Had to warm the cars up in race control in order for the PT's to count.

Looks like a few of us are heading over the 'Harrys' (not Purcy) PT this week.

Mount them on you motor and save millions!!

imull 20-01-2013 05:09 PM

One assumes that they've used commercial (0-70deg) chips instead of industrial (-40/+85 deg) however that's got to be marginal. What temp was it trackside Dudders? Were the lights on the PT or was it just not working?

Dudders 20-01-2013 05:14 PM

Instead of solid blue light they were flashing blue. Heated up for a couple of mins and they were solid and counting. Some didn't work at the start of a race but did when the cells/motors warmed!

Odd.

Interesting, it appears that the unit knows there is a problem. I'll take mine apart this week if I get chance and do some thermal testing at work!

I would guess that the voltage regulator is the problem....

Been using MRT's for about 5 years in 8th Nitro in very cold conditions, never had any issues, are these a new batch of MRT's?

Chequered Flag Racing 20-01-2013 09:18 PM

from the instructions I have from MRT

Quote:

Temperature range: 0-50 C
First time I've heard of this issue.

Would have thought it would have been wide spread back in 2010/11 (or was it 09/10?) when we had two very cold spells

imull 20-01-2013 09:21 PM

Really? Interesting, I can't see how a new batch would change things unless MRT had to make a component change. Mine is only 18months old so I'll see how it gets on in the thermal chamber at work! -40 should give it something to think about

Dudders 20-01-2013 09:26 PM

Would say air temp was -.5c all day, plus any wind chill.

Had both PT's for over two years.

mikeyscott 20-01-2013 09:39 PM

Interesting to see tech specs on my laps if published.

Dudders 20-01-2013 09:44 PM

Think Ian is going to dissect all of them and have a look.

Wonder if he could tweak MRT' to work with the RC4.....

-5c? Not suprised they dont count. A certain part of my body wouldnt work either if that was dangling out at that temperature

mikeyscott 20-01-2013 09:57 PM

Interesting. Better start mounting PTs somewhere sensible.

Dudders 20-01-2013 10:03 PM

Hmmmm perhaps the Mylaps are better insulated?

My thoughts too as you can't take them apart :)

TARTMAN 20-01-2013 11:08 PM

pts

yeah the mylaps lookm better sealed for sure as Mikey said, the MRT's have a gap where the button is so i guess would feel the chill.

I have Harry's and never miss a lap, Mylaps do a trade in i found out today on the MRT's, not a bad deal i think to.

Time to upgrade if you have mrts....... In my opinion...:eh?:

Definitely agree with this, regardless of temperature issues as clubs are starting to make the move to RC4 anyway so MRT's will be redundant. I know this has been a hotly disputed topic elsewhere on this forum, but the simple fact is you won't be able to use your MRT transponders at certain clubs in the near future.

That's the bad news, the better news is I believe the trade in to equate to a cost of around £30 which isn't too bad when you get a top notch harry pt in exchange.

I can't remember the precise details, but there is a thread on the Silverstone page with all the info.

**Edit - just checked the SRCMCC page and the £30 offer is only to club members. I would assume similar offers will be available to all other clubs too though!?
