K1 sounding rough

Anyone else's k1 sounding rough? Or just mine? at middle to high speed it starts, picked it up and when it gets to that point a horrible vibration goes through the car, I had a look and tried different things, and I've narrowed it down (i think)to the spur/slipper assembly, at that point I noticed if I held either side,(the nut on either side) it had 1mm play, is that normal? Also does anyone have ideas on what this could be?

Not the driveshafts rubbing on diff outputs is it??
When in your hand you will have lots of droop

johnboy 05-01-2013 06:29 PM

Try your bearings one fit be on the way out?

Dean Washington 05-01-2013 06:36 PM

Drive shafts not rubbing, car is brand new 1st use, so doubt bearing gone, but I will change and see, does no one else have that play in slipper assembly?

Dean Washington 05-01-2013 06:46 PM

Tried changing bearing, also took both belts off and still the horrible vibration so must be coming from the middle somewhere :(

mark christopher 05-01-2013 08:20 PM

have you got your belts too tight?

sidawson 05-01-2013 08:25 PM

Is it buckled wheels? Had this in the past

Dean Washington 05-01-2013 08:40 PM

I thought the belts may be a problem so I took the belts off, still did it, so that rules the wheel theory out to. I appreciate all the help to, it feels like I've tried everything

Impossible to guess but most likely is a poor mesh between the pinion and spur gear. Try these first. Maybe a bit of damage to the pinion thats hard to see.

stegger 05-01-2013 09:02 PM

Try taking the front belt off and running it, this would tell you if you have a problem with the front. If its still vibrating take the rear off and reattach the front. If it vibrates with both then its the spur gear assembly.

TARTMAN 05-01-2013 09:23 PM

yes

mine did. there should be a little play in the spur assembly but not to much. Loosen the belts and check the gear mesh, I stripped a spur 4th time i ran it so i guess it was a dodgy spur or something got in it. new spur fitted and all ajusted and much smoother/faster and quiet to.

anyone want to sell a K1?

brian s 06-01-2013 01:06 PM

have you also checked the motor for brg failure.

dpackster1980 06-01-2013 01:32 PM

A lot of team drivers at our club didn't put the belt seperator fence between the front and rear belt on the layshaft. This caused their car to sound rough because the belts were rubbing against eachother.

moth898 06-01-2013 04:20 PM

I found it a little loud too but it wasn't the car it was the electronics. I don't want to mention the brand but I swaped out the new esc for a old one and less sound. Another thing I found was that my motor wasn't installed square to the spur gear so my pinion wasn't meshing well. All that being said such a large spur will always amplify the gears meching.

I had that problem, with the slipper moving side to side. Just left it. I also had a terrible vibration, and I had noticed my rear belt tensioner had came loose, and im sure that the belt was slipping and making the vibration, make sure the locking nut is tight once the rear belt tension is set other wise it vibrates loose. The spur gear mesh sounds rubbish where ever it's set, I've put a durango spur in for now a lot quieter. Guna try the rw spur I think.

Name and shame Mr p!

Mine dont sound smooth, changed spur and pinion for new still no joy, belts fine motor bearings fine. Hoping Rw spur will cure.............

durango spur question

Hello all and especially rossi25rc,

Does a Durango spur fit without any modification?
Wich one did you use , the 102 one?
If so, does that fit because that's 4 teeth bigger than the
Schuey one.

Greetings

Hans

My K1 sounds very smooth and quiet. My layshaft does have a little float, which is preferable to it being tight in the bearings, so I dont think this float is causing the vibration.
I'd guess it is your spur / pinion combination. Is it a new pinion, and if so, it'll be worth trying different spur gear. Where abouts do you race?
