22 shocks on XX4 - Mods advice
 

Do you have to make any mods to the 22 big bore shocks to run them on the XX4?

I have just bought a set, sure I heard you do but not 100% what. Maybe lengthen the rear? If this is so can it be done with a different ball cup plus maybe legthening it? Is there a shock length to aim for? Cant find much on the web set up wise :mad:

Would recommend using 22 stand offs for mounting.

I you need a lot more droop then you can use cut down turnbuckle rod ends on the shafts and balls fitted to rear wishbones... a mod the factory team run on 22 buggy.

There are also a good range of longer shafts if required with 22T and 22SCT shock shafts being different lengths.

Cut down how far? Would you recommend trying to get the same length as the standard XX4 rear shocks? Sorry if that sounds totally obvious

Haven't ran mine yet but same length as standard shocks would be a good start point.

I've made a set of rod ends cut to thread length on shafts, they can be wound out on threads if you need them a bit longer.. but worth getting a few rod ends to try out in different lengths to suit

I did try and get hold of Bloomers 2012 astro set up with big bores but had no luck as yet!

(nudge nudge fellow Horizon drivers!)

I actually called Horizon today. Person I spoke to wasn't in the know but said he would get one of the drivers to email me details and set ups but hasn't come through yet. Will chase it up tomorrow and if I get anything I will let you know.

Here is a general starting point for grass and astro big bore shock set up for the XX4. Having not had a great deal of stick time with the XX4 this season I am by no means saying this is 100% right, but I feel this is a good starting point for the different surfaces.

Grass Shock Starting Point
Front – 4x55 Rounded/30wt/Green Spring/4mm internal limiting/85mm overall length
Rear – 4x54 Rounded/25wt/Pink Spring/ Cut down 22 ball cup on the rear, 102mm overall length

Astro Shock Starting Point
Front – 4x56 Rounded/30wt/Green Spring/4mm internal Limiting/85mm overall length
Rear – 4x55 Rounded/25wt possibly 27wt depending on the number of small bumps/ Cut down ball cups on the rear, 102mm overall length.

We have to limit the front shocks significantly to get the droop set right, as when there are no limiters there is a lot of droop! The rear ball stud mod involves cutting down a standard 22 ball cup by 3mm and this is something we do on the 22 as well to get extra droop.

That's exactly what I wanted to know and more. Thanks for the reply and the info and ofcourse I will post back with anything I think is useful! We could do with some modern locked set up threads on here, think that would be great as the old ones are a bit out of date.

You will find the XX4 very neutral in set up tbh... There is not a lot of difference in those base set ups from Delves and with some cars the differences between grass and astro set ups can be huge.

I haven't run one for 10 years but they are very balanced and easy to drive so not something you will have to tweak a lot... can't wait to give it a blast outdoors next year though!

The piston rounding trick is a great mod, i tried it in 22SCT and was so impressed that i'll be carrying it over to all cars... Astro tracks tend to be hard packed underneath and have lots of little bumps so the quicker reacting shock with these pistons really works a treat.

Yeah iv been running my latest XX4 a few months just with the WE shocks. I copied old set ups from here from the old team drivers and the car has been awesome with just the odd change for different surfaces. Infact changing from grass to astro all I did was put a 1mm spacer under the rear ball join onto the hub and it was planted again. Yeah totally agree such a nice car to drive!

Wanted to try the big bores just wanted a set up for them so thanks to Delves I can give them a go and report back.
