ESC just melted!!!!!!!
 

I was going to try my Kyosho MP777 SP2 (turned from Nitro to Electric) wich I equipped with the Novak HV Max Brushless 6,5 System...

I replaced the Tamyia connectors of the ESC with two Deans, and put two 4500 Nimh Orion Battery Packs...so 12 Nimh batteries...that I usally use with my Kyosho ZX-5 SP2...

Good enough to make it move for starting, right?!?:wtf:

Wel...when I pulled the remote controlle trigger the ESC startet smocking...I turned it off...but it was not enough cause the plastic at the bottom of the ESC started melting. This was so fast that I could not even unplug the batteries...:mad::mad::mad:

I bought the Novak system from US and the ESC is completely destroied now so I will foget the warrany!!!:mad::(

Does any of you could help me on understanding what happened???:blush:

Now I need another ESC but it seems that Novak don't sell the HV Brushless ESC by itself for now (http://www.teamnovak.com/products/es...esc/index.html) do you have another ESC to suggest?

Sounds like you did something pretty disastrous there dude!
Are you sure you didn't exceed the max voltage input for the ESC with 12 cells?

Was it all plugged in the right way? Like were the deans connectors soldered the correct way around?

Yep, I did something veeeery disastrous!!!!

The cells are 1,2Volts so 14,4Volts total, and the ESC is supposed to work till 16,8Volts!

It was plugged properly...because it was pre-plugged by the factory!!! All I did was to the connectors, and soldering were fine! Batteries and cables were not hot at all...I really don't understand...I found the same ESC on rcplanet.com but I don't want to melt also this one!!! :confused:

Well putting that kind of power through a speedo there is always a chance it will blow eventually. If you just got smoke and no movement then it could possibly be another problem causing it to blow but it's probably just a dodgy speedo.

The Novak HV-Max is designed to take up to 14 cells. I've been running mine with the HV4.5 motor in my E-Zilla for over a year now with 14 cells in series. It is massively fast, I would love to put it into an 1/8th scale buggy as my E-Zilla is a little unweildly with all that power, I can accelerate to 15-20mph, then nail the throttle and it will still flip on its roof, tops out something like 40mph.

After a years bashing the ESC / motor has never thermalled once. So I think either you had a wiring problem or a faulty ESC. It doesn't matter if you bought it in the US, Novak will still warrant it, you will have to speak to them direct in the US though. Email their customer services.

you got a pic of the way the you soldered your deans connectors? Also were your two 6 cell batteries connected in series or parallel?

Mike, unfortunately I don't have pics of the way I soldered deans connectors because I used thermo deductible plastic. Anyway it's not first time I'm soldering and they seem to be properly done, like others I made for my Lazer that works with a Mamba Max.
I have no idea if batteries are connected in series or in parallel because the ESC comes out with all connetcions/cables already soldered...I just replaced the tamya connectors with deans.

It really seems that I got a faulty ESC...:mad:
