Durga Shopping list?
Hi,
I'm looking to build a Durga and was wondering what I should include on my list in terms of hop-ups, better motor, radio gear, esc, etc. I have had nitro cars in the past (5-6 years) but sold all my kit! :( Budget isn't a major factor so upto £4-500 for everything I would need is okay. Ideally would like to have the option to go brushless and or lipo either straight away or soon. Would be perfect if I could buy everything in one place too but realise that may be pushing my luck! thanks in advance! |

are you building the car to race or just for a bit of fun?

Just for fun, so some extra speed would be good but I'm more concerned about having a good solid build initially so would rather spend some extra and then less time on repairs!

If it is just for fun then I probably wouldn't bother with any options at first (just upgrade if/when you break).
If you are looking for an easy build though DEFINITELY get a hex screw kit of some sort. The standard phillips head screws are a real pain. Since you want easy speed focus your budget on the brushless motor combo - get a good quality sensored setup and it should be a good basis for anything you want to do (including racing in the future perhaps). I think £400-£500 budget will still be a shade tight if you are starting again from scratch, especially if you go down the quality brushless route, because you need radio gear and chargers etc too. You might just be able to do it though. |
my opinion get a slipper clutch, universal shaft assembly, a cheap and good brushless combo like the mamba max.
for the rest of the hop up well just take ur time slowly.... |

Well - for the money spent on that number of hop ups you could buy a 501X... I know what I would do with that budget.
S3305 is not really the ideal servo for an electric car - it is more for nitro trucks - it lacks speed for electric, and the extra torque is unneeded - don't get me wrong, it will work - really you are just as well off with a basic S3003. The Novak XBR should be good quality - Novak have been in the game a long time and they were the first to market with a proper race system - but the XBR has an 8.5 turn limit - that is not super quick, when you consider that club racers will be using a 6.5/5.5 - depends what your expectations are. And seriously consider LiPo if you are just bashing around - NiMH is on its way out, I think in coming years we will see LiPo as the main power source in a lot of electric cars - and even if you do buy NiMH (which do fit the car better and give the right weight distribution), make sure your charger has a usable LiPo charging mode as well - the one you mentioned does not. Sorry if I seem a bit dismissive - really it depends on what you want from the car, the parts you have listed will give a "bling" Durga with a couple of good reliabilty upgrades - it is a decent setup but it won't be super quick and the electrics side of things may be outdated pretty soon. Shopping lists are a very difficult thing to comment on, everyone likes different things! Feel free to ignore me completely. |

Will look to go lipo in 2-3 months (hence the relatively cheap charger and batteries) but for now I don't want excessive speed as that will likely equate to excessive damage! Same theory for the brushless setup, I know there are quicker options but I'd prefer something more driveable for the time being and can upgrade later rather than maxing out everything straigth away. That said, you make a very good point on the charger, I will look at getting a better one so the only other cost is lipo batteries/balancer when I make the switch.

Also, can someone suggest a good lipo battery/charger combo? No real budget limit as this will be a couple of months so will have some gadget cash available.

a 10.5 in a 4wd buggy will be tame with LiPo though, honestly.

cells with greater than 20c discharger and a charger that is either LiPo only, or a LiPo charger (if your in the states, stormer hobbies, Tekin LiPo, 23C $90)

The Trakpower lipo is a good match up for the Durga, I raced with one at Worksop. I used some lead in the car at worksop but later raced outdoors at Batley and took the lead out of the car - with the lipo the Durga is probably better balanced than with the heavier NiMh cells.
There are a couple of lipo's you can get from Trakpower but the bigger 4900mah fits just fine in the Durga. There are some other lipo's about of course, but I prefer hard cased ones like these as I don't fancy damaging one. If you're going the LiPo route, just make sure to get a brushless with lipo cutoff - I would have thought most or all modern ones will have that feature though. For charging, trakpower do a fairly simple & neat little charger which is good value but will only work on 12v (as do most chargers) and if you're just wanting to play around you might be better looking for one that does mains as well - or buy a 12V power supply seperately. A lot of chargers do LiPo now so there should be a lot to choose from. |
