HL Dampers
So I broke down and bought a set of HL Dampers for my 502X. Mainly for the bling factor. I have been running my stock grey dampers for over a year and can attest to the improvement offered by the titanium piston rods. I upgraded my grey dampers with the Ti rods longs ago. The Ti rods are smoother for longer, and seem to be harder steel underneath the coating as I have never bent one, while a bent a plain on in a front-end crash.
My question: Does anyone notice any difference with the HL cylinders? When I got my new shocks and compared them to my old shocks on the bench (same oil / same spring) to tell you the truth I could detect nothing different in their smoothness, action, or anything, and my old grey shocks were still smooth after over a year of use. Is there a performance difference that anyone can detect, or is the gold colour of the HL cylinders just cool? |
Good question. I have both but never used the grey dampers.

Ok,
So I have a guess how the gold HL damper bodies could be an improvement. I do not think that they are a performance upgrade, but they may make your pistons last longer. I measured the pistons in my grey dampers and they were out-of-round by about .08mm after a year of racing, which was putting some play into the shocks. I am now wondering if this piston wear will be less with the new gold damper bodies. I'll check again in a year and let you know  |
