Cutting out carbon fibre?
 

I'm looking to make some custom carbon fibre shock towers for the Durga which will move the shock mounting holes up 5mm.

I have designed and cut out the shock tower templates from thin card.

I have a sheet of 3mm carbon fibre and wanted to know if anyone else has had a go at cutting carbon fibre and if so, any tips? (I intend to use a Dremel).

drill the holes whilst it is on some flat wood....

cut it roughly to size them use the sanding drum on the dremmel.... and WEAR A FACE MASK!

are these to mount up to the standard car or onto/replace the 3Racing cf towers?

To replace the 3Racing CF towers.

im gonna guess its very toxic carbon dust, that maybe only the stig can breath, so id use a face mask too.

Long sleeves, face mask, and gloves. Don't let the dust get in contact with your body in any way.

send your templates to fibrelyte and have me made, they wont be that dear, will be symetrical and safer on you

depends what you call cheap, I have never found Fibrelyte to be cheap.

Dust on the arms isn't a problem, you don't absorb it, carbon shards can act like splinters and be a real pain, the dust is cumulative, in as much as, once it, it don't come back out.

make sure you have a good face mask and a pair of goggles/safety glasses! also, make sure you clear up the dust afterwards... its nasty stuff!

is it basically fibreglass, so treat it the same? fibregalss dust, bad times:thumbdown:

The dust generated by cutting/grinding carbon fibre is a cumulative carcinogen, so that's bad, mmmkay?

I think Fibre-Lyte offer good value for money.
I have had many parts made by them, from one-offs to batches of 50+ parts.

You'll get exactly what you ask for, but it will be cheaper if you send them a CAD file that they can use without further work.

I would suggest that 3mm is too thin for shock towers, so make 2 and double them up.

depends what you call as cheap though innit Dom, if you are more than capable of making it yourself, do it.... thats what I do.

the dust is not toxic, it just clogs your lungs up

my technology teacher had to go to hospital to get loads of mdf dust out of his lungs coz it were growin in him. mmmm nice.

The dust comes out when you blow your nose anyway, it`ll be fine :thumbsup::lol:

yh just cover as much of your skin as possible wear face mask and goggles.. as for actaully cutting the stuff i used a dremmel cutting wheel and then finshed with a fine sanding drum last time i cut carbon but that was 2 mm thick so dunno if the same disk willl work should do though
