Tyres for medium grip carpet

Sorry for all the questions of late :(

I've just bought an Ansmann X2 pro for the bargain price of £70 brand new. It seemed cheaper than upgrading the shocks on my Mad Rat and the Mad Rat will be useful for spares.

The X2 doesn't come with tyres, I've been told the best tyres for my local carpet track are:

Front: Schu Yellow stagger rib slim (no insert)
Rear: Schu Yellow mini pins (med insert)

Will these tyres fit the standard X2 pro rims? and will the mad rat kit inserts work fine on the rear in place of the med insert?

Rears are fine but the front stagger ribs will require the front wheels modding.(this isn't just the ansmann.)

The stagger rib is quite a narrow tyre; so it deforms if you stretch it over a 'wide' wheel. Also the wide base to the tyre doesn't fit we'll into the groove of the wheel. So using a Dremel cutting disk and a sanding disk you need to remove the inside of the wheel and the rib near the outside. See below

Is it necessary to cut off the inner edge of the wheel though? I don't mind the rim showing on the inside.

No dont dont have to cut the rim it just looks better if you do
i use a stanley knife and score along the rim and then just snap it off

Yep no probs you can leave the inside edge on I just think it looks neater on track without and when I see them going round left on it would distract me.

... I don't think us mere mortals would notice much difference between schuey and the ansmann insert .... But they are less than £2!

Just one more question, low profile or standard staggers?

I think the staggers in the first post are the 'original' low profile non cut variety; no longer manufactured, and getting rarer!

Currently schuey do cut staggers in 'standard' and now low profile.

Cutting the wheels is for low profile schueys whether stagger rib or cut stagger rib.


The cut versions generally give more grip then non cut ones.

I'd go for low profile staggers U6592 (non cut); if you can get them (DMS?)

I can only get hold of the cut staggers.

So I only need to cut the rims for the low profiles? The standard ones will fit straight on?

Yep. ..... But whatever you need to keep an eye your ride height .... Front arms level or slightly below ..... Changing from standard to low profiles will make a big difference. ... And the standard cut staggers have quite a high sidewall.

Will the inserts need trimming/shaping for the mini pins?

I don't usually bother. Just bung them in.

No you dont have to do anything with the wheels as i ran staggers on mine and they fitted right on with no probs and no inserts either. So i`d try to fit them before do anything to the wheel. No cuttin or dremelling required. But i have now cut the inside down to look neater, but thats it.
And yes i have ansmann wheels on my monkey before anybody asks;)

another way to cut off the inner bead..(this is what i do) use a stub axle in a drill (such as a mad-rat front axle or one from a knackered CVD joint), fit on the hex & pin & mount the wheel as you would on the car.. spin the wheel in the drill & lightly press with a craft knife or scalpel where you want to cut the bead, after a few seconds the bead should come off & the cut will be clean so shouldn't need sanding smooth.

it's worth noting, some clubs don't let you use mini-pins on carpet as it can fluff up primafelt, so check with the guy who runs the club 1st.. if this is the case, use a sanding disk & spin the tyre against the disk (again can be done with the drill & stub axle you used to cut the bead) to knock the pins flat or just run the car up & down on some tarmac for a few minutes, so long as you don't go down below the depth of the pins your tyres should last ages.
