Best car for up to 5k

Right, whats the best cars i can get for cheapish....

An (diesel) car, with some go so i don't fall asleep trying to reach 60
A fastish petrol car
etc

Something not too old or stupidly high in tax.

Cheers

im looking at an Audi A3 at the moment 2.0 TDI sport. Its a bit more than 5k but you could get a 52 plate golf for that i would think. I loved my Mk 4 golf (150)

a most excellent choice sir

A 130 Golf is just about reachable i think, will have to look around. I'd prefere an a3 though tbh.

Lee 19-05-2008 12:36 PM

Reading the reviews on the a3 people say they prefer them to the golf but they all say that they are not sure if they are worth the extra ££££.

Im still going for one just because i like the wheels and that it annoys her indoors because it only has 3 doors:woot:

RogerM 19-05-2008 07:28 PM

Lee ... your misses will be glad to know they do a3s in 5 door as well .. Only model you could only get in 3 door was / is the S3.

RogerM 19-05-2008 07:32 PM

Can't go wrong with the VAG diesels. Best of all worlds, great economy, nice and smooth, very flexible and FAR more mid-range than the petrol 1.8T lumps.

My engine is the rotary pump based engine and it's great now it's been chipped (with cam, turbo and injectors all tweeked too ..... helps knowing the guys who build the fastest diesels in the VW cup!!). PD lumps (EUI FIE) are a little worse on fuel due to the changes made to meet Euro 4 emission standards, they are also a little less responsive down low, but they are much nicer to drive, almost petrol like!

another vote for a VW diesel...130bhp version is all you would get for 5k although i've seen high milage 150bhp version on Autotrader for just uder 5k. Were talking 100k miles plus though.

RogerM 19-05-2008 07:37 PM

OJ .... just run in then .... it's a 250,000 mile engine if serviced properly!!!

GRIFF55 19-05-2008 08:38 PM

get a 2.5tdi vw transporter. Not a car, but once you've had a play in one you'll love it!! I drive ours more than the car now:thumbsup:

chris_dono 19-05-2008 08:44 PM

nobody's mentioned it, but a Volvo 850R :)
can be had for about £3-4k ish, looks fairly standard, but has 250bhp under the bonnet and plenty of room for karting your gear + passengers around

Diesel: Seat Leon TDI - same engines as Golf and Audi, just less Dollar. Pre March 2001 will be cheaper to tax too.

Petrol: Focus ST170 (High mileage), I love mine. But tax is going up high over the next two years.

How about something Pre March 2001, such as a Mk3-4 Golf Gti, Leon Cupra.

Although I loved my Golf 1.8T (150) it just doesn't compare to either the other half's A3 TDI Sport (115) or my Jetta TDI Sport (140). Admittedly the A3 could do with chipping to get a bit more mid range, but the Jetta if awesome right through the range all the way to stupidly quick.

Both will do 40-42 mpg during normal daily journey and on long runs will do 50mpg (if you haven't got a lead foot like me :eh?:)

For travelling to race meetings, both my old Golf and the A3 are a pain. Both are 3 door and I always found that something has to go on the rear seats and access is pants.

Have you looked at either a Seat Leon or Skoda Fabia / Octavia? Should be able to pick up a 2002 model for a few quid less than the VW/Audi and still get the same performance.

 Defo agree Griff, my parents have a T5 LWB 2.5tdi (174) as a camper. Absolutely flipping awesome.

Thanks for the comments so far, this seems cheap for the car: http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk..._mileage=80000
