Experiments of the BIG bore kind....
 

Well guys,

I've got myself a set of big bores, they are Durango ones. In my opinion they are a great set of shocks, well made and easy to work on.

I've got them fitted to my C4.1

The shafts are quite bait longer that the associated shocks. So it's had to have some internal spacers to match the droop of the standard shocks, about 6mm in the front and 4mm in the rears.

I've got it set at the moment with 1.2mm 6-hole pistons all around.
35wt Losi - Purple (4.20) spring, that's about the same as an AE blue.
32.5 Losi - Light Red (2.6) spring, that's a little softer that an AE silver.

To be honest they feel pretty good on the table, I think the back oil is a little think maybe, but that's just going off feel. I think 27.5-30 will be better.

Il be running it a few times over the weekend, so il be giving it a try and reporting back!

Have you got a picture of the standoffs you used to mount the shocks?

Whats up with those 2 screws on the front shock towers

The fronts are the normal DEX410 standoffs, the rears are M3 screws, I've used the bushings from the bottom fronts of a DEX210 in the top. So that it fits on the M3 screw with no slop.

First run...

Let's say, not so good.
I have not limited the travel enough so the car sits way too heigh.
Even with the pre-load nuts all the way to the top.

The shocks are too slow to react and the oils are too thick.
Next step, I'm going to move to 4-holes with bigger holes.
Maybe 1.3 & 1.4.

put the AE shocks back on and you to can do 19 laps like me:lol::lol::lol:

only kidding mate they should be alot better at bury:thumbsup:

maybe cut a coil or 2 off the springs, but yeah im running 1.4mm and 1.6 mm 4 hole pistons in mine

IMHO would of been better off going to the converting the ae shocks into big bores for ease of setups available might of been cheaper also

Get it on track and get the 40w oil ready for front end

How do you mean converting to big-bore?
I know you can get collars to change to big bore springs, but it's not really big-bore. The body is still the same?

I can't see any benefits??

I had a spare set if these so they stand me at nothing.

The benefits are supposed to be:

• More consistent spring damping, easier to make bigger coils.

• They do not rub against the shock body.

Also the coating used on the ae-springs effect the handling, so you have some differenses between new and worn ones(coating thicness). Though, there will be some differenses here anyway?

Anyone tried bigbores? If so, are they better than v2's. Either full shock, or just spring upgrade(Esp on a B4.1)?

At the moment I've tried the DEX210 big bores, But the shock is too long,
I've limited the travel with spacers under the pistons. But there is too many spacers so there is only a tiny bit of travel.

I have gone back to the V2 shock body, But with the Durango big bore springs and cups.

We tested a B44.1 with them at Southport on Sunday. The setup was:

Front:
2hole 1.5mm - 35wt Losi Oil - Durango Purple Spring (Same as AE Blue)

Rear:
2hole 1.6mm - 27.5wt Losi Oil - Durango Light Red Spring (Slightly softer the AE Sliver)

Overall that was not too bad for a starting setup. Although after a few laps, I think the piston holes are a little big. I have drilled some more.

We are going to try 1.4mm Front 1.5mm back. Ive also drilled another set with 1.3mm Front 1.4mm Back.

At this stage we are just testing, But the BB springs on the V2 bodies do feel better than the standard springs.

We're you running that setup 35/27.5 on Sunday in the dry at southport?
That's miles away from what I run there way to soft in my opinion
Was it easy to push it hard?
