Losi 22 electronics install
Hey guys,
Please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section but this seemed right too me. I'm returning to racing after a five year absence and have my eye on the 22 kit. I've been recomended to Losi Xcelorin Combo with 6.5 motor. First of all is the 6.5 a little too quick for a 2wd? I used to run a Novak GTB back in the day with a 6.5 but I understand the motors have come on since then. Secondly, will the xcelorin fit well onto the 22 chassis alongside Orion 90c lipo's? I do still have my K.O Vantage radio that I plan to use with the standard K.0 reciever which seems huge by micro reciever standards. I do have a Futaba 9550 low profile servo so that's sorted. What I'm asking in a round about way is are these components going to fit properly? Thanks for reading. Chris |
Hi Chris,
Although you don't mention it, I'll assume that you're asking because it plan to build up the car in mid motor configuration? In rear motor config, there's probably not too many electronic combinations that can't be made to fit but in mid motor, things can get really tight. Firstly, you might struggle to get hold of an xcelorin combo these days as AFAIK, they're discontinued. Secondly, 6.5T is about as hot as you're likely to ever want in a 2WD currently. Depending on the actual brand of motor and depending on whether you were to use a more modern ESC with boost timing, you might want to consider dropping a wind or two down to a 7.5T or even an 8.5T. Although you are a returning racer, you might want to play it a little safer on your return and plumb for a slightly milder motor - you won't loose out very much if anything at all. I haven't got my 22 to hand but the Low Profile servo is paramount if you are going to try to get all of your electronics in front of the cell space. Many people have done this (my own install with a Spektrum S6070, Spektrum SR3520 micro Rx and an Orion R10 ESC does all fit up front) but many others have fitted wither the ESC or the Rx on the angled motor guard face or even built a plate so that the ESC can sit above the cells. Hope this helps |

I think an 8.5 is way to go, i would take a Reedy or Speed Passion.
And even with a Standard size servo you can squeeze the ESC in front (picture of my car attached) but i'm using a smaller receiver. The capacitor is fixed with double-sided tape on top of the servo, with the standard body i would tape it to the red battery wire i guess. At least that's it for mid-motor. |
very tight
I run an R10 Pro ESC, standard size/1258 savox servo and spectrum micro RX, with the switch, the PT and the capasitor, its VERY Tight, but fits with standard size saddles. more room can be got with a stumpy lipo.
Have a look at the measurments and also some pics in the "show us your 22" section. should get a better idea in there, so decent interior pics i seem to remember. You can put the esc on the motor guard if you prefer, depends what shell your running thou..... its a sort of crowbar it all in...... :) As for the motor, I started back fom a 22 yr break, last year with a 7.5t, plenty quick enough...... prob to much. Now, i run a 10.5T with timing and turbo/boost added and its as quick as anything on the track on the strait, but more driveable in the infield. MUCH better than the lower turned motors.... The TC drivers out there will be the ones to know more about the timing etc, as thats where i got my info from, an EX TC champ...... Seems to be more people going the 10.5t route now and playing with ESC settings. seems to run cooler than my 7.5t was to. SOOOOO Much easier to dive and way more control, less punch meaning smoother all round but my laptimes have increased..... I use a 6.5t in my 4wd and thats monster enough to. dropped from the 5.5t and again, much better once you add timing etc..... Hope that makes sence??? |
I totally agree...all my 2wds have 10.5T with ESC boost on

???
let us know how you get on. interested personally...:D
