Which Speed Controller -LRP/Nosram/HobbywingV3/Orion

Need a new speed controller for my 2wd. Been looking at NOSRAM/LRP/HobbywingV3 and Orion.

After a speedo with a good 'feel' to it, not an on/off switch like a Tekin! Hence the above choices. Also after a speed controller that has good after sales service, not best pleased how I've been looked after with the current speedo/motor went up in smoke after a dozen race meetings.

Interested to hear if LRP/Nosram have sorted their reliability issues. Really liked my SPX I had a couple of years back, should of never of sold it!

What a about a Vampire SR1+, im using one for about 6 month and im liking a lot (buggy 2wd)
I have a SP PRO ,older, about 2 years now and isnīt so lienar than the vampire , vampire is similar to a LRP/Nosram in feeling.

I'm in the same boat the now looking for a good speedo for my 4wd with a smooth power delivery.

Any suggestions I'm using a Tekin rs the now.

The new Orca VX is just amazing...

Have you tried the new Tekin software Vegas 223? I use it on my RX8 and find it to be real smooth. From what I can tell the RS series are also a lot better with the 223 software.
The HW V3's should be good if you can get them, the HPI Pro Flux is the same as the HW V3 just badged differently. LRP and Nosram are the same, Orion's are also selling cheap at the mo.
I have an Orca Vritra in my 410 and it has been faultless and smooth, but have heard of many people having problems and then no or very slow back up. I have got a Viper VTX10R in my SX3 but haven't been able to run it in anger yet, but so far so good. The only issue is no distributor in the UK at the mo.

Orion R10 or HW V3 is my vote.

The new DualSky speedos are also getting some good press, and their going to bring out a program box for them soon as well so no need for a laptop.

I'd like an LRP, as I do like the throttle/brake feel. However, what puts me off is the reliability, heard of quite a few speedo's going up in smoke!

Be interested to know whether it has been supplied by Answer RC, or imported from America/Far East, as warranty issues could be tricky.

It's a heat issue most prevalent in TC Modified using very low turn (3.5-ish! :wtf: ) motors. If you are running something higher then it shouldn't be a problem. To be certain, run a booster or Rx pack straight into the receiver and leave the LRP speedo switch off - permanently!

The car is now switched on from the booster/Rx pack, and a booster is no more hassle than not having one. IME (not including the HW v3) the LRP has by far the smoothest and most linear throttle and brakes, so I would be fitting a booster with an LRP if I were running 4WD with a hot motor.

Having said all that, the LRP/Nosram problems only seem to be on the hottest motors in hotter climates in TC, so I'd go with it anyway. If it does fail, LRP are aware of the problem and providing good customer service to replace the speedo, and then you can run with a booster. Vanilla LRP with a sensible motor and you will not go wrong IMHO. HTH :)

Interesting, will be going in a 2wd with a 6.5turn or higher. Dont tend to run a lot, if any turbo timing in 2wd.
Is it the BEC thats failing on the LRP?

jayst 08-06-2012 06:24 PM

i used lrp but now gone to orion . loads better but i do have to run a power cap with my savox servos

You might think that, I couldn't possibly comment... ;)

I don't know if you would find that too 'hot' a combination for an LRP, but if it is you know what to do.

No worries on that part, they even repair esc out of warranty.
I got a direct link in Hong Kong for repairs if needed.
