I always wanted one of these as a kid.

Do you still have the special transmitter that was made for it?

Restore without a doubt. Tamiya have just released this or maybe a sort of rerelease with an updated shell and they've also rereleased the Bruising Bruiser which I guess has maybe taken the value of this down a bit but I would say restore it

I didn't realise there was a special transmitter I thought it was just a 4channel with a little six way gate on the throttle side which was difficult to set up and get all the gears meshing correctly... Well it was when we were 12 and my mate got one for his birthday !

In which case if my mate still has the transmitter in his loft ( I know he definitely has the truck but I think the transmitter got lost ) I will scan the gate so you can make a new one out of plasticard or lexan ?

If you've got a manual it might be in there full size in which case you can just copy that. Let me know if I can help though.

Nothing special about the original 3 speed transmitter, apart from Acoms including a shift gate in the box.
The new 'official' 3 speed transmitter is the Futaba 4VWD, but all it is is a rebdaged 27mhz version of the Skysport 4 with a plastic shift gate included in the box.

Much better is to choose whatever 4 channel radio you want and get a shift gate from Bruiser Builder.
If you prefer steerwheel then get a radio with a third proportional channel and replace the third channel potentiometer with a 3 position switch.

Looks like it just needs cleaning up, not much needed on the chassis assuming the gearbox works fine. Bodies are no longer the expensive option it was thanks to the rerelease ones. Just as long as you don't need to replace the tyres it's an easy restore.
