Old Atomic-Carbon proto's

As people want to see more pictures of the upgraded XX4 i do a few years ago, i thought it might be nice to post various photos from the different protos i have made over the years.

Hopefully it might inspire people to have a dabble themselves and mod there own cars  or dream up something new.

OK 1st up is a Slim 2 which i made back in 2006, it seems this layout style is catching on again

And a alternative version of the Slim 2 to reduce torque steer.

Big problem with both cars was the slipper clutch had no adjustment, it was either locked up or slipping like crazy.

I did race the car at a 2wd mid west regional at Marston Palmer and it felt like a 4wd to drive, but it was very very hard to put the power down without lighting up the rear tires, due to the slipper.

Ok next up is my idea of a upgraded Losi XX4 the 4X from 2008

Photo 1 - this was the 1st proto using a flat CF chassis to make sure everything fits before the mould is made for the tub chassis.

Photo 2 - This is comparing the car against a 501

Photo 3 - The tubbed version of the car, i am pretty sure Simon Reeves and Brian Preddy ran the car, problem i had was it really needed some aluminium parts like the motor plate instead of plastic which flex a lot. And with a XX4 rear end and a Cat SX front end, it would be to expensive to produce a kit as you need two donor cars. But with 3mm pitch and wider belts it was better suited for brushless and lipos.

Looks really good. Could you of used the xx4 front end as well? Thanks for the pics, loved my xx4 :)

XX4 front end was well know to be very weak hence using the Cat front end which was more upto the job  and dimensional was very very similar to the XX4 :D

It was super fast round Coventry right out of the car:thumbsup:
Where are the pics of the best proto ever ;-))

The kinda xx-4 is just awesome!!!

rcjunky 02-05-2012 05:27 AM

in this day and age with the price of 4wd buggies, the x4 would probably sell, make some alloy parts and get a team driver to race it, see how good it does

Its about time you put these pictures on oople....

What about the XXX4, CR2, S2LW, S2, S4 and S44

When I ran the car at Eden Park it was really good, but like Jonathan said it needed 2 parts made out of alloy, as when the motor got hot the heat transfer caused the motor mount to twist and flex, as it was made from delrin.

I want a 4X!!!

Bomberpilot 02-05-2012 06:15 PM

Hi Maurice, yes was a interesting project, with the motor 10-12mm further forward for sure it helped with the steering.

Photo 1 is the proto and Photo 2 was the final car based on the Tamiya 501 with revised belts.

How about the 3 gear S2 just with the B4 gearbox turned round, and then the 4 gear one with the carbon fibre gearbox sides......:)

I have both in the garage, but not complete :(

You have a few missing from that list as well.

Slimferno / Raptor / Slim4 / Slim4 LCG / Foofighter / CR2T / MiniCDB / 201GTO / 410Ultra. Also there are a couple of cars i cannot post details on, but i will see if i can get permission to post them here, as they are very interesting.

The biggest amount of photos are for the Slim 2 / S2 as many different proto-types were made and tested with i think four completely different gearbox's used (B4 / GT2 / Carbon fibre gearbox / Plastic gearbox) over a two year period i think.

Tom3012 02-05-2012 07:26 PM

Im guessing the CR2T was the truck version of the CR2? Saw one on ebay the other day and almost wet my pants! :wub

Supervlieg 02-05-2012 08:03 PM

I've got an CR2-T
Jonathan made this one especially for me for the Belgian GP 2010
Will make pictures tomorrow ;-)
